Afternoon Mr Sproson,
Just to show my hand, the geared/un-geared debate is one of the few topics that will cause discord in the Guvnor ranks, only one group of which are correct in their point of view.
I have ridden the areas and hills you mention on my singlespeed and have every intention of riding the Manchester 100 in a few weeks time. For me I like the cleaner lines and to be honest the added challenge when tackling a hill after all anyone can drop a gear.

You are right, Matt, to recommend the geared option. In any case, I always sell 90 percent of geared Guv’nor. The look is the same and with a single, if you want, one day, to add gears, it will cost to you a lot. In more, you said to Philipe Sproson that you use the second and third gears anyway but I can tell you that it is clever to use the first one each time you start and you will be never tired.

Philip, I’d recommend the geared option. I live near the North Downs and Chilterns in Berkshire. No massive hills but rolling. The way the Guv’nor rides as you point out is a pacey cruiser, so the second and third gears get used by me anyway.

just by chance seen a Pashley Guv, what a great looking bike, as someone who likes
to ride both a racer and a mountain bike, this is the bike for me, would you go for
the single or three speed, i live in Cheshire so we do have a few inclines at times,
peak district not far away, cat n fiddle run, Bakewell, ride n smile i guess on a Guv.

I have been pining for a throwback city bike ever since I bought my wife a Dutch-style city bike for Christmas, and the Pashley Guv’nor is my obsession.
My question is one of aesthetics over functionality.
Has anyone seen a rear rack with a bag attached to one of these beauties, and can it even be considered?

Have read through this site. Many times! Finally took the plunge and picked up my Guv’nor tonight from Velorution in Central London.

The ride was surprisingly speedy on a test ride in Central London, Pacey if not speedy, I managed to upset a few commuters on the their single speeds on the way home tonight!

Really looking forward to getting a few miles in, starting this weekend!

The Pashley Roadster Sovereign… is an interesting machine I used to ride a similar Bike in the RAF about 1974 It Was very old Then I remember it well As standing up To get Some Speed the Gear Or Something Slipped And I ended On The ground With a Badly Torn Uniform and bloodied body …But that’s another Story
Reason On Back Pack More Freedom Less Sweat, My Last Giant Though Had Rear Panier’s Saddle Bags Which Flipped Off (And flipped Me Off) By Trapping The Rear Wheel Don’t Remember too much About That Except Helmet Was In 3 Pieces…

Back to the Luggage It would just be shirt and Trousers ( I cycle in My work Boots)
And water as It’s only 12 miles I had today’s water in my Tracksuit Bottoms
I currently don’t have Mudguards (The Wooden Types Look A little Heavy) but have been lucky a slight shower tonight but I do recall getting caught in the rain Once and having to shelter behind a wall, I wear spectacles (They don’t have wipers) and I cannot see that well without :)

Well that’s it from me Philippe, writing this has brought back a few cycling memories

Yes it will be a lovely experience to ride a Guv’nor daily. Obviously as others cyclists told you, you need a 3 speed SA not only because it’s hilly where you are but also because it’s old fashion to use it as it exists since 1905
Regarding the luggages, I hope you have small item to bring. If not you would have to fit a carrier and for raining days mudguards. That means you need a Pashley Roadster Sovereign…
But I’m sure you prefer the Guv’nor. So, check the wood mudgard on the website and have a look on the tweed run which was last week end. You could get some ideas for bringing the luggage, why not on your back.
Which size of frame do you expect?

I’ve used single speed to travel all over London, but if you are in an especially hilly area then the three speed may be worth investing in.

Mr O’Brien, I’m certain that, if you do purchase a Guv’nor, cycling the 12 miles both to and from work will become a pleasure.
Luggage? I find that a Barbour fishing bag hangs nicely from the top-tube and, incidentally, a 7’6″ 4-piece fly rod fits securely below it. Obviously, any large Trout caught will have to be released back to the water unless you also have a saddlebag. Or some of the wife’s Louis Vuitton.
As far as ratio’s are concerned, there are many who extol the simple virtues of but one speed. I, though, have been pedalling Sturmey-Archer 3-speed cycles since childhood and find them a delight.

Hi Right I am now in the Market for a new Bike I want it for work and pleasure It HAS to look special. (And that is the Gov-nor)
The work ride is about 12 Miles each way Mainly cycle path but some Road/Hills the main is a long 1 mile Drag .
Question too on Luggage, if you hang anything on this cool looking machine it would loose it’s lines so back pack yes?
Then is it 3 speed for long rides or would the single do
Lot’s of questions but it’s a serious buy and Need to get it right
