Yes, and all goes well, no mischievous thievery yet. Only fitted to the front, 3-speed, but they look dandy and fitted easily. My only concern is their tension, slightly harder to leverage as tight as the nuts they replace. And you wouldn’t want to knock them the wrong way by accident, though that would probably never happen. Would be very nice to have a matching pair on the rear. Oh the 3-speed/single speed dilemma! I’ll report back in a year.

Morgan.

TCP’!.….……good to hear your nuts are in fine fettle, all four for them!!  Anyway, that/them aside, I gather that your Guv’nor is a modified pre-production or early example, from the photos previously posted and the comment above. Maybe you could furnish some details of its provenance? For the interest of fellow Guv’nor wheelers.….…..safe riding on and all, Geoff.

Dear DW, hope the clotted cream is not going awf too much in the glorious sunshine?!

Yes, I am indeed the very lucky owner of “The pre production Guvnor”. It’s falling into my ownership

came about after a photo shoot at Pashley’s factory in Stratford Upon Avon in 2008. (The photo on

this site of master brazer, Clive Horton being the result).

Eyeing it up and drooling whilst trying to focus.…. I was told it was the development and press model,

hence the odd scratch and ‘goodies’ a la wing nuts etc. After the shoot I stated my solid interest and

suggested we do a deal.

A week later, visiting the factory with photo proofs, they said ‘your Guvnor is ready to take…’ “At

what price?” I replied. They had very kindly let me have the bicycle as a trade.

Breathless, shaking, but euphoric(!!!) I suddenly realised that I had driven to Stratford in my.…. Smart car,

and no way on earth would I get it home that day. Pashley, the true and fine company that it is,

kindly had the Guvnor, No.1, delivered to my home the very next day.

I’m humbled by their action and will remain a true supporter in what ever way I can be to them.

I hope this proved to be of interest.

Ride on!

TCP.….….Excellent! Now this ties in nicely with the new topic I’ve started -  Archive, where this sort of thing can be recorded for future reference.

PS: did you get my PM re. transfers/decals for your Sunbeam project? If not, check out:  http://www.hlloydcycles.com  , this website may also be of interest to other members.

One and all,

I’ve been making enquires into sourcing these wing nuts at a sensible price, see ongoing comment in Topic - ‘Wing  nuts, On Your Bike’s email reply’.

It appears there are different threads used on the component axle ends and wing nuts, so although they look to have the same threads they don’t. They could be incorrectly/unsafely matched, so beware!

For information these are the details:

Front axle all models, Sturmey Archer X-FD — 9mm.

Rear axle Single Speed, Sturmey Archer X-RD — 9mm.

                                                              Rear axle 3 Speed, Sturmey Archer X-RD3 — 13/32″.

Rear axle Plus Four, Sachs Duomatic — 9.5mm.

Gripfast wing nuts supplied via Pashley — 9mm.

Original Gripfast No.2 wing nuts — 3/8″ BSC.

Hope this information is helpful.

Safe riding, Geoff.

A good morning from the continent.

I’ve received the ‘missing’ wing nuts for my Plus Four — directly through Pashley, at a cost of…   19 GBP.

When I claimed these parts to be standard items for the PF they simply wrote to me that “they don’t come as standard due to regulations, but we can sell them as spares”. Which they did…

Quite odd to see a nation go on about (EU) regulations, when they have one themselves on…   the wing nuts of the Guv’nor…

Ride in style,

Wim.

One & All,

Just to remind you fellows that the Gripfast wing nuts are still available to GOC members for £10 a pair UK, £11 a pair outside UK including p&p, see ordering details on Home Page.

So come on chaps, get a pair and maybe a spare while you can at this price. Pashley dealers are currently charging £18+p&p a pair, that works out to twice the price!

Safe rides, Geoff.

Taffy here,

1964 — 1989 South Wales

1989 — present Oregon, USA.

I purchased a 3 speed Guv back in Aug this year, ordered a set of wings after the bike arrived, Lorin sent them with a frame protector also. They make the front end complete.

I got a plus four yesterday #48, and pre ordered a set of wings also. When I opened the box, I found another set of wings in a bag with the pedals, reflectors and misc items. Point being, I do think that the wing nuts are part of the package on some models, and not an extra purchased item.

Hello Geoff,

That 9.5 mm thread on the +4 rear axle is a oddball size. I am thinking 3/8 –24 BSF, any thoughts on this ?

One & All„

Just a note/reminder to you newer members. These Gripfast No.2 wing nuts are now available for your Guv’nor, see my post in Comments on Home Page — “Wing Nuts on the Fly: A Special Offer”, dated February 7, 2011. 7:59pm., for ordering details etc..

I have managed to aquire and just taken delivery of the last of the final batch. So suggest you get them while you can, when they’ve gone — they’ve gone.

Safe rides.

PS:.… Taffy, these wing nuts were only fitted as standard equipment to the Guv’nor Plus Four although they did feature on some early pre-production cycles and publicity photos. The 9.5mm rear hub thread quoted was with reference to the Sachs Duomatic technical data info., these were  German made, so wouldn’t be an Imperial thread!.…DW
