It wont be to Guv’nor owners I assume,

but i always thought that the rims were the old english traditional size of 28″ (that is to say 28x1 1/2) , because, well, thats what it says in the specifications and blurb about the rims [28 inch gold lined black alloy rims… ] , naturally i thought it would follow that the cream tyres were the 28“x1 1/2 also known as 40x635mm, i even remember reading on some review somewhere that it was good of schwalbe to continue production the older cream 28x1 1/2 tyres for the Guvnor.

Imagine my complete surprise today when i notice a picture of a Guvnor tyre and on the side, what looks to be written as 622-700x38 (which appears to me what we would call a 700c tyre thats 38mm wide or 38x622mm)

can anyone please duck down to the shed, opps scratch that Laugh ,duck down to the living room and confirm the actual tyre size? If in fact it is the later more modern size, could someone please measure the width of the rim also (in metric [millimetres] if possible other wise i am sure we can use a converter lol)?

if the rims are the more modern size of reduced diameter (700c also known as 622) then i am pretty curious if the width of the new rim has been reduced a tad as well, compared to the older westwood rims

best regards to all

Primo.….…I quote from the Owner’s Manual.….…“28 x 1½” puncture resistant tyres (40–635). Beware of spurious tyres marked as 28″ but with a millimetric code of 622. These are too small for the GUVNOR.” My Schwalbe Delta Cruiser tyres are marked: 40–635 (28 x 1½ — 700 x 38B) HS 392.

So there you have it! Where did you see this picture?

ah, cheers! that puts my mind at ease! 40–635 is certainly the old 28 inch by 1 and a half, that i originally thought it came equipped with.

i must have not seen the picture clearly or something, i have been looking at quite a lot recently so i am not entirely sure where it is now.

perhaps i saw some of that code written, now i am wondering what the 700 x 38B stands for, for that matter the HS 392 is curious too.

thanks

Dear Primo,

as Mr. Duchy Wheeler already stated, the Guvnor tyres are according to ETRTO (European Tyre and Rim Techical Organisation) 40–635 and thus having an inner Diameter (bead seat) of 635 mm and are 40mm wide.

The 700x38B is an old French way of measuring bicycle Tyres and gives the following information: the tyre has an outer diameter of approx. 700mm, it is approx. 38mm wide and the B is the inner diameter of the tyre, in this case 635mm. But be careful, the French lettering system always has to be looked at with regard to the outer diameter. I.e. 700c ~ ERTRO 622; 700B ~ ERTRO 635mm; 650B ~ ERTRO 571mm (Triathlon Cycles) etc.

Have a look here for further information on the topic: http://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html

The HS 392 is the Schwalbe code for the Delta Cruisers’ tread pattern. The Fat Frank’s tread for instance has the code HS 375.

Kind regards from Germany,
