Gentlemen.…

Had a lovely outing on the Guvnor this afternoon up onto the edge of Peak District, however 2 miles from home I went all soft in the rear !!!. As the weather was so delightful i decided to stride home with purpose rather than get hot and bothered at the side of the road… (or telephone the support crew, especially as she was busy washing my cycle kit)

… and thank God I did… 2hours in the workshop and I’ve only just completed the rear tyre change (dodgy tube, failure at the base of the valve by the way)… how in Gods name do you do that at the side of a road !!! (or does it get easier the more often you do it I wonder)

… my only question, the little chain’methingy that screws into the rear hub’mebob, do you just turn it one or two turns ? everything seems to be working ok again, but it barely seems to be on the thread ?

Yours…

Evening MGcC,

Mrs. Adam has a five speed SA on her Princess, if I’m reading your methingys and your mebobs correctly the little chain is used to adjust the indexing on the gears.

It is of course possible to repair a puncture with the wheel “in situ”

This is a picture of our esteemed founder at last years tweed run doing just that:

Regards,

Adam

MGcc.……check out Mr irobot’s post and web link in the Forum > The Public House > Out & About, page 2, dated 1:28pm April 7, with regard to setting up the S-A 3 speed. I’ve also found a spot of Tippex or white paint on the end of the indicator spindle can be helpful with making adjustments.……safe rides, DW.

Gentlemen,

Many thanks all for the advice, i think my rear chain~methingy is now properely secured.

As an aside, whilst changing position of the 3 speed trigger contraption on the handlebars, the black plastic cover fell off… eureka !!!… underneath is a nice metal chrome trigger. Like a retro chrome butterfly emerging from its 1970s black plastic pupa.… I beleive it looks far more in keeping with the Guv !

Dear MGcc,

Every cloud.….…

It may be worth using Slime and trying to avoid future punctures. I’ve used it for years and swear by it. It’s basically green gunk which you fill the inner tube with and which immediately seals the hole should you puncture. I have tubes which haven’t been changed for years and are still serviceable despite having pulled a thorn or two out of them. I have heard people say that when it does eventually give up then the tube becomes unrepairable but I haven’t experienced that yet!

Cheers!

Interesting Sir.… so you just pump it into a fresh inner and use it as a preventative measure ?… I’ve only ever seen the slime tubes, but i’ve just searched on the interweb and see you can purchase tubes of the green stuff.… may have to give it a go, at least pump some into my rear ! Surprised

You do indeed just pump it into your rear.….…..or front!

On reflection I realised that I’ve only had one tube failure in 10 years and that was close to the bike shop who were good enough to fit a new, slime equipped, tube. And that despite regular off road trips and frequent removal of thorns from tyres. So I haven’t actually ‘slimed my own tubes’ for quite some time. Either I’ve been very fortunate or the slime really does work. Either way whenever I purchase a new bicycle, or new tubes, I always ensure they are well filled with slime.

Cheers!

There is no way I’m pumping slime into my rear.

At least, not without dinner first.

I called in to a bike shop this afternoon, and after reading this current thread, I was just a little apprehensive about enquiring after said slime for my own tubes… fearing I would get a response much like this poor chap:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.…._6GGDhHzKI

However, I wasn’t greeted with a knowing look or a forced smile (much to my disappointment in the end), but was given some rather deflating advice! The chap said that as I already rode a heavy bike, adding slime would only make it worse (perhaps he put it a little better, but still…). Consequently I didn’t make a purchase and left with my head hung low.

Surely it won’t make that much difference, will it? I haven’t had a puncture in four months of Guvnor ownership… and I would like to keep it that way! How does your Guv ride with the added Slime, Mr MGcC?

Kind regards,

Martin

To be honest Ade Sir, I’ve never been that keen on liners, from what people have told me in the past they cause more punctures than they stop, and they unbalance the tyre very badly unless you get lucky with the fittment. But these seem a new type so maybe they work better…

Clearly p*******s happen (see James above) and I use slime in my Humber cos I cant be bothered to fix the likely p******e in the rubbish tyres that are on it.

I have had my Guv’ a good while now and every time I look on the side of the tyres it says Schwalbe Delta Cruiser (p******e protection). I will trust in it. I still havent had an ‘event’. Not saying it wont happen (see James above).

I also use Schwalbe with ‘p******e protection’ on my Qnt. It has happened to that but right up in the sidewall and to be fair they are 20″ tyres witha much slimmer profile). lets face it the Deltas arent exactly the slimmers world champs of tyres!

I guess my point is its about risk threshold - at what point do you decide the ultimate protection is not only a Schwalbe with slime and maybe an additional liner but also not taking the bike out to prevent a puncture Smile

The bike is heavy but as someone else says its probably a glass of wine, so slap the slime in so to speak if it makes you feel better (I carry a foam can and a puncture kit — just in case which is transferable). Bike shop Johnnys pfah!

Aftermarket liners? The Cruisers already have a liner in and I have had p******es from liners in other tyres without the blue protection in the Schwalbes.…..

It would be interesting (probably only to me Smile) to see what % of Guv’noristi have had p******es
