BBC4 at 8PM this evening, Gentlemen.

On again for anyone who has been on Mars for the last few months.

Incidentally, Saturday week brings us the Acorn Cycle ride. 100k’s along the back roads through the (at present) bright yellow fields of The Vale of York.

http://acorncharity.org.uk/ for details.

I’m participating but not, sadly, on the Guv.  I’ve been coerced into riding as part of a team so it’s on with the Lycra and out with the Wilier.

Good Evening Mr. Terry,

Always “worth a watch” if only to disagree with his choice of components.

Good luck with the ride Sir, an excellent cause.

(I’ve popped a .uk) on the end of your URL so the link works.

Regards,

Adam

Good evening Gentlemen,

it is also available on iPlayer. Unfortunately had no time to watch so far.

Wishing you best of luck and all the best for your ride, Mr. Terry.

Kind regards from Germany.

Good evening Gentlemen,

An enthusiastic programme, but personally I thought it a shame that Reynolds and it’s contribution to the world of cycling didn’t get a mention when Mr Penn visited the Birmingham area to get his Brooks saddle.

Long live the 531.

And Mr Terry, best of luck with the Acorn Cycle ride. Perhaps you will give us an account the day?

Kind regards,

Martin

Evening Gentlemen,

It doesn’t get mentioned in the program but in the book he does does talk about Reynolds 531 and a bit of history, maybe the produces thought the nuances of 753 vs 953 would be lost on the viewing public.

Adam

Gentlemen, I watched the programme (again) last night but with Mrs.T sat next to me.  I’ll certainly never forget the look She fired at me when Mr Penn stated that his first port-of-call was to be Brian Rourke’s frame building emporium in STOKE-ON-TRENT, our September destination for the Tourride/Guv-ride event.

Almost as if She suspected an ulterior motive.  To be perfectly honest, having a frame made had’nt occured to me.  However, now it has.

I’d organised a day off today, that’s why it’s raining.   So.…..I’ve been in the garage taking bicycle measurements. The Guv’nor, the Wilier and the Marin, a hardtail.

Three measurements on each bike.

From the top of the saddle, directly above where it clamps to the stem, to the floor.

From the same point on the saddle to the top of the furthest pedal, with the cranks aligned with the seat-tube.

From the same point on the saddle to the centre of the ‘bars where they clamp to the stem.

The Guv’s numbers are 42.25″, 38″ and 30″

The Marin’s are, completely by accident/coincidence/luck, exactly the same!

The Wilier’s are 41″, 38″ and 28.5″

I have been suffering a bit of backache after around 30/40 miles on the Wilier, perhaps a 140mm stem might help (it has a 120mm at the mo)

Any comments?

I’d be interested to know if other multi-bike riders have similar measurements on various bikes.

Mr Terry… I may have misunderstood your measurements, but the measurement I take in terms of saddle to handlebars is not to the centre of the bars (to the clamp), but rather to a “theoretical line” through the centre of the grips on the Guv, compared with the top of the drops on my Spesh Roubaix (ie the clamp of my carbon steed).

Mr MGCC, I took the measurement from the saddle to the centre of the ‘bars where they pass through the stem as a reference point.

I have no grips on the Guv’nor, I’ve replaced them with Brooks’ bar tape as, most of the time, I ride with my hands just inboard of the levers, unless carving a swashbucklin’ way through Harrogate’s traffic, mainly elderly folk on electrically powered scooters.

On the racer my hands are primarily just above the lever shrouds and the Marin, obviously, has fairly straight ‘bars.  So, on all three, my hand positions are pretty close to that reference point.

Mr Adam, it all becomes crystal clear once intoxicated. Does for me, anyway.

Sir… I also do most of my bike fitting whilst drunk, I worked on the principle as my favourite Disaronno Liqueur dulls the pain alittle post ride, then why shouldnt it assist in the intial pre-ride set-up of the beast !

… just as a matter of interest is your saddle angle the same across bikes.… I’ve found that on the Guv I’m more comfortable (ie no shoulder stress) with the saddle nose up by a couple of mm’s compared with my Roubaix (which I have dead flat) ?

Agreed, the televison programme gives short shrift to the fine British framebuilders, however the book talks at length about Reynolds.  I never knew the Reynolds 531 tube had been around so long.  I recommend his book, It’s All About the Bike to really fill in the details.
