Evening Gentlemen,

As many of you know I was recently caught red-handed making an unauthorised purchase of a pair of Lauterwasser handlebars. My intention was to slowly acquire the various bits and pieces as and when a deal could be found.

Unfortunately this plan went out of the window within a few days. Mr Booster from these halls and I were on a pleasant jaunt in the evening around Cheshire when slowing down for a junction my rear brake lever was ripped off the cable wrapped around the rear hub and the brake locked very firmly on. Thanks to judicious use of Mr. Booster’s King Dick, cables were un-wrapped, brakes eased off and we continued after a short pause at a somewhat slower rate.

Hopefully without making this post too long I’ll start by listing the various shops I purchased my bits and pieces from:

Lauterwasser Bars — Velo Drama

80mm Nitto Stem – Hubjub (bugger just found this place http://www.velosolo.co.uk/shopbar.html)

Dia Comp Reverse Brake Levers (23.8mm) – Practical Cycles

SA Pinch Bolt Assembly + various cable ends etc. – SJS Cycles

Brake cable, outer (custom length) & advice — local bike shop

Brooks leather bar tape – Hargreaves Cycles

As iRobot previously mentioned the standard cables are too short, my pitiful attempt at soldering the trumpet nipple end only resulted in burnt fingers a bruised elbow. Plan C tracked down the SA pinch bolt assembly.

The actual removal of the original bar/stem and fitting the new one was straight forward with the stem and bars easily dropping into place.

The only problems I encountered were self-generated, wrapping the tape on the bars (after numerous attempts I’ve still ended up going the wrong direction on one of the bars).

I’ve only ridden about twenty miles so far but my thoughts are

  • The actual grip is fairly narrow in diameter if I re-wrapped the bars I’d first wrap them with some gel tape. This would make them a little thicker and pad the cable underneath.
  • The shorter stem has quickened the steering up and now gives a firmer feel through the bars.
  • I think, if possible the brakes are even worse.
  • I think the firmer feel and the slightly longer riding position gives a more “sporting” feel when riding the bike.

Well, before I bore you all to death here are some pictures of the final result:

Regards,

Adam

Mr Adam, may I congratulate you on a wonderfully informative post. Invaluable advice, expertly dispensed. I shall certainly be returning to this one again and again.

And your photographic account… stunning. Truly stunning.

Tis a shame about the brakes, though.

Kind regards,

Martin

Interesting post for sure Mr Adam.…

… in respect to the bar tape, you could always “double wrap”, with some cheaper cushioned tape, then wrap your lovely Brooks leather over the top (wrap in opposition top and bottom)

… Looks lovely though, very clean…

Sir, I use automotive neoprene under my ‘bar tape. It’s 20mm x 2mm and has adhesive on both sides.  It sticks like a rude dog to a tramp’s backside and is available from auto-product wholesalers such as SAS.

I don’t wrap the bars with it but I cut a few strips to stick along the ‘bars before wrapping on the tape.

The Lauterwassers look the part, Sir.

Mr. Adam,

thank you so much for your comprehensive information and the photographs of your accomplishment.

I am using the same brake levers with caliper brakes on my last project and I can understand your comment regarding the braking performance. In my opinion the levers have a bit of a wobbly feeling compared to others, but so far I always managed to stop in time Wink.

Kind regards from Germany,

Hartwig

Evening Gentlemen,

Thank you for your comments, much appreciated.

Mr GCcG, those were my thoughts. The only problem I now have is I’ve cut the Brooks tape so I’ll live with it for now.

Mr Terry, I’ll keep your suggestion in mind if I re-wrap my bars. I may be able to run the cable between the the neoprene strips

Mr Hardy, I agree with you entirely, still they look good.

Regards,

Adam

Mr Adam

May I say how please I am to see that your velocipede is once again road worthy, and may I say what a jolly fine job you have done. Bravo!

I do hope your brakes are in fine working order as I guess it was a bit hairy for you coming down the Wizard at a great rate of knots the other week!

And pray tell good sir, when will I be enjoying the pleasure of your company once again?

Evening Mr. Wooster,

Jolly glad to hear you are back in the saddle and it sounds like with a good out come.

Ready whenever you are Sir. I’m on holiday this week — homebased catching up on my chores and a little project.

With regards to the brakes, I think I’m being charitable when I say they work.

Regards,

Adam

Good day to you Mr Adam

Well the domestic front seems to be mending and the ex Lady Booster looks like she may once again become the present Lady Booster so my part time residence in Cheadle appears to have been re-instated!

I have a busy schedule this week and next (culminating in the Fens ride — which looks like I will attend with son — not sure yet if the Guv is going to get the outing yet as scratching around for some suitable headgear — it may have to be the Colnago if I am struggling — don’t really want to go to the expense of buying another helmet)

However, week after next is looking good for a cheery jaunt through the leafy lanes of Cheshire so I will be in touch once my diary has been sorted out.

All the best

Wertie

Hello dear sirs.

I don’t understand why the manufacturers do not reproduce this old system where the cables are in the handlebar tube.

It’ very secure and elegant easy to fit.

This is my personal city bike built whith old saved elements.

Oh how I love Mercians.… Mercian Cycles is actually my local bike shop in Derby.… I go in there and salivate all over their stock until the nice old chap in a brown overall comes over and suggests its time I went home.… Cry

Adam,

Not been on the tinternet for a few weeks, so just looking around again (new Baby taking my time up).  The new bars look great, I agree that the brakes are not great but they never where to start with!  it was a pain soldering the cable ends on so i can see why you went for the pinch bolts.
