Good afternoon Gentlemen,

A couple of weeks ago I took my Guv’nor S.S. to where I bought it from for it’s first service. I told them about a strange clunking noise I had whilst pedalling and said I was quite happy for them to take as long as they want, as I wanted the bike to be perfect! A week later after they had ‘upgraded’ the rear sprocket to a Shimano, I happily rode the 12 miles home.

Alas on dismounting at my abode I noticed that one of the handlebar end caps was missing. I rang the shop, they said they knew about the missing end cap, and that is was missing when I brought it into the shop for the service! I was a bit taken back, and said, sarcastically, that it must have fallen off on the ride to the shop! Thinking that an end cap would only be a few pence, I asked him to order one for me. Alas, Pashley do not sell these individually, they are only available by buying a new pair of grips, for £50! Anyway, the dealer rang Pashley to see if they had one lying around the factory. I am still waiting for their call back, and have been too busy to chase it up, but I will do soon.

However, I know for a fact that my precious Pashley has never been dropped, crashed or mishandled (whilst in my possession anyway). So if it fell off whilst cycling to the shop, shouldn’t that be a warranty claim? If a wing mirror or steering wheel fell off my brand new car, I would surely pursue this as a warranty issue!

Also, does anyone know if the grips and handlebar end caps come pre-assembled on a new Guv’nor at the factory or is this a job undertaken by the bike shop?

And, is this a common problem with the Guv’nor’s end caps? Has anyone else had this issue?

Warm regards

Rich

Evening Sir,

Hopefully Pashley will come good, if not I second MGcG’s suggestion, although this may prove a more expensive but more enjoyable alternative.

I also have a pair of Brooks end corks spare from my little project if you would like them?

Regards,

Adam

Rich,

I’m sure the leather grips come factory fitted, not sure about the end caps, they simply secure with a 3mm grub screw so could easily be fitted by the dealer when doing the pre-delivery inspection.

Sadly Pashley’s warranty and customer service has been found wanting in the past, so good luck with that!

Safe rides, DW.

Edit & PS: cork end stops have the advantage of not causing top tube dinks!

Morning Gentlemen,

Yes, agreed Mr MGcycleChap, Champagne corks would indeed add a little fizz to the ride, and as Mr Duchy Wheeler pointed out they would stop any dreaded top tube dinks.

Dear Mr Adam, that is indeed a very generous offer. I will see how I get on chasing up my bike shop, as from an aesthetic point of view the grip and end cap design was one of the key things that helped persuade me to buy a Guv’nor in the first place.

I will let you know how I get on with my bike shop. My feeling is that it was probably a shady ‘customer’ who unscrewed it whilst it was in for service…

Thanks to all

Rich

Hello dear sirs,

my personal thinking reading several feed backs and my proper experience is that Pashley is generally not very cool with his customers .

I’m not sure that those “artisanal builders” as they present themselves, are worthy of our enthusiasm and love ?

It seems to me that we not meet the better listening . It’s not easy to comunicate with them , also to obtain pieces or informations.

I repeat is my personal thinking.

Their strength is that they built original and good bikes but I think that  they can progress in public relations.

Wishing that this words don’t shock you . WinkWink

I can well believe it fell off on its own, I noticed by chance that one of mine had come loose the other day so I tightened up the grub screw. Good thing too if they cost 50 quid each!

Hi,

I would sell or trade the new grips off my Guvnor. I Pulled the grips off when I got the bike (so no wear) & put cork tape on (Guvnor 2 style).

I would love to get a set of Soma Lauterwasser Handlebar.

Afternoon Gentlemen,

M. Ian I agree with you, as much as I like my Guvnor the public face of Pashley seems to constantly let them down, with any further contact with the bike or owners frowned upon. This view seems to be the polar opposite of Brooks who from my experience have as much pride in their customer service as their products.

With the Royal Mail moving away from Pashley supplied bikes, in my opinion they need to start courting the public a little more if people are expected to pay £1600 for a bike they are going to expect to it be of good quality and in the event of something going wrong a speedy resolution to the matter.

I don’t think you are I are saying something that has not already been said.

Regards,

Adam

Hi Adam,

If Rich Senior doesn’t need your brooks end caps I would love to purchase them off you.  I ordered a custom made bike recently and bought a brooks saddle to go on it and the bar ends would be a better finish to the cheap worn silver ones it came with :o)

Good afternoon Gentlemen,

Dear Mr. Adam, I can confirm that I will not be taking you up on your kind and generous offer.

I thought that the most expensive method of replacing my missing end cap was to purchase a set of Pashley grips and end caps. I was wrong.

I decided to install Champagne corks instead. I had a few old corks lying around and managed to find a matching pair of Moet and Chandon stoppers. However I decided to drill them to fit the handlebars. This created a problem as my old battery drill had packed up. I bought a new battery drill for £80, plus a 22mm cutter and matching arbour, so I probably didn’t get much change from £100…

However, I am delighted. I have saved quite a bit of weight by replacing the very heavy stock plugs. I was really surprised at the weight of these, and this has confirmed my view that if one of these had fallen off whilst I was riding, I would have known about it! There would be a matching dent in the road too and my ears would still be ringing…

The cork will of course, not damage the top tube which is a truly excellent improvement to the original caps. I also feel like I have contributed to the build of the machine too, which is nice. I will post back soon with pictures of my Moet end caps. I would like to find some vintage Dom Perignon corks though, maybe a nice pair of ’53 vintage?

Thanks to all for your words of wisdom and Mr. Adam in particular for his very kind offer!

Absolutly Sir,

In these parts folk would call you a yuppie if you had a matching pair of Vimto caps.

Any pictures Mr. Senior?

Sorry Mr. MGcC, did not mean to be so ostentatious. Truth be told, most of the corks we had were my wife’s Asti bottles and I often had a go at her for keeping the old corks in the first place.

Round these parts Mr. Adam, they will think me strange for not riding a horse.

My dear old dad and his dad often used to say “measure twice, cut once”. Alas, I still managed to drill the plugs not precisely centred…

I think I will peel off the plastic top tube protectors…

Bon Voyage!

Evening Gentlemen,

Mr. Senior, looks pretty good from here. I do like the way Guv owners make the bike theirs with tastful upgrades.

Well done Sir.

Rich,

A ‘corking’ (groan!) mod to your Guv there!  We can all relax a little now and not tighten the the grub screws to our handle bar end caps quite so religiously!

By the way, how do you keep your bar grips so spick and span?  I use Proofide but whether that is responsible or just time and the elements, mine have darkened somewhat.  This has the benefit of making them a closer match for the brown B17 saddle.

Cheers,

Alex

Dear Mr. MGcC, yes indeed, looking forward to meeting up with you at the Rattler, but I know with even this weight-reduction mod, I will need some other advantage to keep me within sight of you…

Thank you Mr. Adam, much appreciated.

Dear Mr. Alex McF, no trade secret… I don’t do that many miles, I never ride in the wet and I have never used Proofide on the grips. It’s still only a couple of months old. I am sure over time a certain amount of grubbiness will appear. I would like to think of it as ‘ageing gracefully’!

Warm regards

Rich

Gentlemen,

If anyone is following along at home, don’t! My carefully done modifications were a disaster, I lost both Champagne corks on the first longish ride I did! I think I should have used “No Nails” to fix them in place.

I am glad I didn’t take off the topbar tube protectors as I am currently going commando. I just hope I don’t crash and get impaled on one of the bar ends.

I will currently be in the shed designing my Mark 2 versions…

Rich
