Evening Gentlemen,

To confirm

Location:

Stratford — Upon — Avon

Dates:

13th — 14th August.

Number of Days:

Two, but obviously anyone is more than welcome to come for just one day.

Now for the difficult part, the details…

First and most importantly, the ride will go at a leisurely pace nobody will be left behind, and hopefully everyone will have a wizard time.

My suggestions are:

Agenda No.1

Saturday

10.00 a.m. start 40–50 miles pub lunch about half way

Sunday

A local bikeshop organisers rides open to all that finishes about 1.00pm lunch then home

or,

Agenda No. 2

Saturday

10.00 a.m start 30–40 miles pub lunch about half way

Sunday

A local bike shop organisers rides open to all that finishes about 1.00pm lunch then home

I assume if Pashley decide to open the doors riders will be happy to forsake some ride time in favour of a visit.

Do any riders planning on joining us for the weekend live in the area and be prepared to plan a route?

Any thoughts regarding accommadation for the over nighters?

As usual I’m happy to go with the consensus.

Regards,

Adam

Well done Sir

13/14th good for me… I shall be doing the New Forest Rattler the following weekend, so its a perfect easy run out/shakedown for old Guv’nor… perfect timing

… whats the plan for the saturday evening (and accomadation needs to allow for Guv’nor parking !)

.… cant wait, well done again Sir

Evening MGcG,

Thank you Sir, we do appear to be making progress don’t we?

Regarding the evening I thought maybe a half decent pub meal or Italian (from experience I cannot recommend a curry the night before a ride).

Accommodation? I suppose is a choice of Youth Hostel, B&B, one of the chain hotels or maybe camping (although a little undignified)

Suggestions please?

Regards,

Adam

… Sir.… I dont think I’d be allowed into a Youth Hostel !… surely there is an age limit !

… camping !!… I havent camped for 20years… however if I’m drunk enough, I suppose I can sleep anywhere (or sleep in the back of my Cruiser!)… (I’ll bring my German made bike lock)

Afternoon MGcC,

It’s been a few years since I’ve stayed in a hostel. I think they gave up on the age limit when the Playstation generation came in. It looks like the one in Stratford had a real ale bar and cafe http://www.yha.org.uk/find-acc.….index.aspx

I’ve also found this list of cycle friendly B&B’s http://www.stratfordbikehire.c.…..php?id=53

Adam,

Crickey.….…I’m afraid a cycle ride of over 20 miles, is going to be well out of my league! So I will have to bow out of this one.

Safe rides ‘One & All’.

Mr Wheeler,

Please don’t jump ship at this early stage? My initital suggestions are merely that, somthing to get the ball rolling and open discussion. I am more than happy to make the arrangements as inclusive as possible. This isn’t my ride.

Please feel free to suggest alternatives, hopefully we can all come to a consenus over the next week or so.

Regards,

Adam

Adam/‘One & All’,

As you say we need someone with local knowledge of the topography to advise on route planning. Is there anyone out there?

Thinking out loud —  is there a cycle path along the River Avon? Would we want to take in the Pashley factory at Masons Road? Or use this as the start and finish point? Pashley may be agreeable for us to use their factory forecourt, it will be a weekend so the site will presumably be closed. I’m happy to contact them to see what they say.

From a personal point of view I would prefer an easy going less than 20 miles route, hence the riverside suggestion.

Safe rides.

Gentlemen

Now we have a location, possibly its time to look up a local cycle club, always useful for route information, maybe even to act as “pathfinders” ?

Mr Adam,

Firstly may I congratulate you on taking on board this mammoth task. Bravo, good Sir!

Secondly, superb idea Mr MGcC– I shall do my ‘bit’ and make enquiries, and report back forthwith.

Thirdly, Mr Wheeler… it would be a real shame if you were not to join the peloton. Might I put forward a suggestion that this ride be a purely leisurely and sociable ride? What say we stretch out the day?

Just a suggestion (I am thinking aloud here), perhaps we might negotiate the first six or seven miles towards a suitable cafe for refreshment… then another steady ride onwards taking in glorious scenery and photographic opportunities, until we reach a suitable public house for lunch. From there, another seven or eight miles for a welcome stop at (I imagine) a rather nice patisserie for afternoon tea… and then, if we are not too satiated from the days events… onwards to our final destination… the point from which we had started out.

What say ye, Gentlemen?

Kind regards,

Martin

I whole heartedly agree with your suggestion in principle.

I should hate to see members not wanting to participate in apprehension of the distance or that it may be a tear up leaving carnage scattered all over the environs of Stratford On Avon.

If the event was over a couple of days then perhaps we could all get “broken in” with a very leisurely potter taking in various tea rooms and hostelries en route on the first day with perhaps the same format on the second day but with the distance between stops increased to thet on the 45–50 miler we may stop 3 times.

I think that most members should be able to manage that — especially if the distance was conducted at a leisurely pace — after all this is what it is all about — if it took 5 hours to do the 50 miles (excluding stops) then so what?

We will have all made the effort to travel the distance and be there so I think we should all make the most of it — and besides it will allow more time to socialise and acquaint ourselves with each other.

Well gentlemen?

Best regards

Wertie

I’m with Geoff on preferring a shorter, genteel, ride. Purely because I am an incurably lazy sod.

Stretching out the time is a sound idea, perhaps with a stopping point (pub) for those that want to jump off, whilst anyone wishing to go for a further ride can loop around back to the agreed point and meet up with the rest of the group.

Explaining my arcane ideas is never an easy task for me, but if theres a point A and people want a shorter/easier ride (depending on how they feel on the day), they could then trundle over to point C, knowing that rest of the group will turn up eventually as they will be riding to point C via point B. An optional loop, I suppose you could call it.

Fenrir.….….what a jolly good suggestion, would hopefully cater for all our needs and requirements.

One & All.….…I tracked down and contacted a local Straford-upon-Avon cycling club ‘Shakespokes’, they responded very promptly and positively to my request for help on cycle routes etc.. I have forwarded the email to Adam. This looks like it could be a very good contact.

Ironically the fellow I emailed lives opposite the chap who runs Pashley’s flagship shop near the old river bridge!   http://www.traditionalcycleshop.co.uk   They also have a route and cycle hire section.

Safe rides.

Excellent, Mr Wheeler! They sound like the ideal cycling club to garner cycling route information.

Evening Gentlemen,

I have spoken to Rob at Shakespokes and he’s been incredibly helpful and has offered to send a route with a half ride cutting corner option. He was also good enough to offer a bit of advice regarding accommodation, basically if you don’t want to pay through the nose for quaint we’re on Travelodge or Premier Inn for about £70-£75 per night. The YHA has five twin rooms left for £46.

Must dash, but thoughts on accommadation would be appreciated, it would be good if we could all be based in the same building but I appreciate we have a lot of different requirements.

Regards,

Adam

Is there room for another Guv’nor? I have tentatively booked that wekend in my diary if yes.

I would probably camp.….….….….….….….….. ideally next to a pub (I have booked glorious sunshine and nil wind for that weekend) .….….….….…… the only route knowledge I have is the cycle path near the river that is on an old railway path (I  bought my Soveriegn from the bike shop in SuoA and rode it there first) theres a cafe on it.……

Erh.….….….….….….….…… are you doing the long or the short? I was perusing said ride and thought ooh yes The New Forest, I’m not far from there fancy a bit of that.… then read off of the website the following

Don’t be fooled into thinking there are no hills in the New Forest either. There are some punchy hills on our routes, including the famous 25% ‘wall’ called Blissford Hill!” Hmmmm I wonder if that is on both rides.…..? Smile

Dont think picture linked but for those who dont know the area and are interested go to http://www.newforestrattler.co.…./index.php and the ‘home tab’.
