Dear all

I wonder if anyone else is having puncture problems. I have just suffered my third in 3 weeks. An obvious reason might be that the offending object is still lodged in the tyre, yet I seem to be able to have puncture free rides, as long as I stick to roads. It is on the canal paths and the more gravely, stony ground that I seem to pick them up. My tyre pressure is around 55 psi — is that too high? I wish the tires were like the bullet proof ones on my roadster!

and its always the front tyre!

anthonycrook,

Maybe I’ve been very fortunate or lucky, but I haven’t had a puncture in the 18 months or so that I’ve had my Guv’nor using roads, cycle paths, tracks and old railway lines, suppose I’m now tempting fate!

I’m very diligent about checking tyre pressures to 65psi (recommend pressure for the Schwalbe Delta Cruiser tyres) at least once a week at ambient temperature and for debris embedded in the tyre tread during and after rides. Thinking your pressures are a tad too low at 55psi. As usual Sheldon Brown’s website is a font of all cycling knowledge see:   http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tires.html

Evening Gentlemen

I would agree, 55psi is too low, I also keep my tyres topped up at 65psi. I’ve always found if you run at the top end of the recommended pressures (written on the sidewall) you have less punctures.

… the only issue i’ve had so far was a tube failure at the valve stem after one ride (who knows how lthe tyre/tube had been stored, left underinflated etc etc before the bicycle arrived in my sweaty little palms)

Sir, have you had the tyre completely off the rim to mend the punctures?

If not, and the damage is always in roughly the same area of the tube, the offending object could still, as you say, be lodged within the tyre.

If not, and the damage is in different areas of the tube, you’ve been rather unlucky.

I hav’nt had a flat on the Guv yet but I do always carry a spare tube, just in case, and I’ve managed to find (at Halfords) a Boardman compact pump which fits, along with tube, spanner and three plastic tyre levers (also Halfords) into the small Brooks leather saddlebag.

I run my tyres as hard as I can pump them up.

Off for a spin ’round the dale now, what’s the betting I get a puncture?

Evening Gentlemen,

Damn you all! I was planning to ride the Guv on my morning commute today and guess what?

well this morning I noticed that the tube I replaced yesterday had also deflated, so I need to start forensically examining my wheel and tyre. I just hope I find something!
