Gentlemen

Following the success of the Flat Out In The Fens yesterday it has been mooted by Mr Martin and myself that we should try and get a July ride in as a taster for the Stratford weekend in August.

A route of around 30 miles in the Hebden Bridge area has been suggested by Mr Adam (who is now feverishly preparing the aforesaid into a legible state) that should terminate with tea and cakes at a well known cyclists cafe that I believe is in the area.

The aim is to meet up at around 9.00am and hopefully be all over bar the shouting around mid-day. It is probably most likely to be on the Sunday so if your nearest and dearest will let you out to play then suggest that day.

Needless to say you will have already wined and dined her on the Saturday night and she will be so full of food and alcohol that her slumber may continue well into Sunday afternoon — by which time you will be back and she won’t even noticed you have been away from her side for a few hours!

Just make sure that any evidence is removed before she catches sight of you upon your return — the usual stuff — bike leaning on the radiator in the hall, sweaty kit sitting on the floor outside the bathroom etc etc, and everything will be just fine!

Interested parties so far include Mr Adam, Mr Martin, MG Cycle Chap, Mr Terry and of course my good self (clad in my new Brooks L’Eroica jersey — ordered today and praying it will fit!).

Other potentials are Baron Von Zach and anyone else who may be able to get there.

I know this may be a bit of a long shot but Mr Irobot from Southport is cordially invited — it will certainly give you a break from nappy changing and bottle sterilising for a morning!

What? an outing in July, Stratford in August, Giro de Stokio in Trentio in September — it’s all too much I can hardly contain myself! Has anyone any ideas about an October and November run? It will certainly be tweed apparel weather by then!

The December run I would suggest should be a traditional “Holly” run (so come armed with secateurs and a sturdy bag) followed by a traditional Christmas lunch in a hostelry somewhere afterwards.

Well if you are anything like me, you will be chomping at the bit and rearing to go, so Gentlemen what say ye?

Pip Pip

Gentlemen,

The Guvnor social calendar appears to be positively brimming with upcoming events, hurrah to that! I will most certainly give October and November some thought, whilst the December run sounds just perfect. And very glad to hear you have ordered a Brooks jersey, Mr Wertie. Marvellous.

As regards the Hebden Bridge jaunt, I am good for either date at that time in the morning. I’m looking forward to it already.

Kind regards and indeed, pip pip!

Good Afternoon Gentlemen,

After a thoroughly pleasant ride around the leafy lanes of Cheshire with Mr. Wooster this morning I have extracted my finger and plotted the route for our little Hebden Bridge sojourn.

http://www.mapmyride.com/route.….w/39171720

I’ve also scanned the relevant pages of the book, so if you wish to immerse yourself in the redoubtable Ms. Baldings musings please feel free to PM me your email address and I will do the necessary.

Regards,

Adam

Superb, superb and thrice superb. A marvellous route. The beginnings of a Harold Briercliffe odyssey, one hopes!

Good morning sir. I trust you are well and in fine fettle.

Our outing seems to be Sunday 17th July at 9.00am — rendezvous in Hebden Bridge yet to be decided.

I do hope you will be able to make it and join myself, Mr Adam and Mr Martin.

Was rather hoping for a few more to take an interest but alas no joy as yet.

It would appear as though the minute exercise is mentioned they all go to ground!!

I suppose it is nearly holiday time so guess folks may be away.

However anyone reading this who may wish to turn up and cycle with us would be most welcome.

It is intended to be an extremely social event at an extremely social pace — approximately 30 miles in the most beautiful English countryside followed by tea and cakes at a quintessentially English cyclists cafe.

Surely we must have some candidates to swell the peleton?

Looking forward to seeing you again Mr MG Cycle Chap!

Pip Pip!

… Good God, dear fellow! What kind of talk is that? “Poor shot at a lie in”… fair makes me shudder at the thought. It’s an early morning alarm call for me, followed by star jumps at the foot of the bed and then into an ice cold shower. See you in Hebden Bridge for 9am sharp, old chap!

Kind regards,

Martin

Gentlemen, does anyone know the area and a suitable car-park to rendezvous?  And a pleasant cafe for a full English/pint of tea?

I’m fairly certain I’ll be there and I’m rather looking forward to the excursion, it’s not an area of Yorkshire I’ve visited.

It is in Yorkshire, isn’t it?

Mr Terry

The ranks are now swelling and becoming more excited by the day with the prospect of our peleton exceeding 4!

I do hope you can make it — I am sure that a note on the forum will advise of the rendezvous point at Hebden Bridge.….……which I do believe is in Yorkshire.….…somewhere!

Welcome to the throng sir!

Gentlemen,

May I suggest the New Road Car Park as a suitable meeting point? Address for the sat nav is: New Road, Hebden Bridge, HX7 8AD. It’s got a ‘Safer Parking Award’, although that will be of no concern to my beat up automobile, and charges are a mere snip at £1.60 for 4 hours.

Mr Terry, I have been perusing the cafes in the town (of which there are many) but it appears all of them open at 10am on a Sunday, bar ‘Sauce’ cafe which opens its doors at 9:30am. Perhaps it may be an idea for us all to ‘load up on carbs’ prior to leaving home, then to replenish at lunch time upon our return from the Briercliffe sortie. Mr Adam, did I hear you say that you know of a cycle friendly cafe? It’s a good ten years since I was last in Hebden Bridge, and my memory has trouble recalling what I did yesterday, let alone that far back.

Very much looking forward to this one!

Kind regards,

Martin

Evening Gentlemen,

Hebden Bridge is not short of car parking, although I think the rates may have gone up to 30 new pence per hour. The actual town could be covered with a cravat so I would suggest park wherever you can and we meet at the Old Packhorse Bridge between Bridgegate and Old Gate (parking available on both roads).

Mr. Terry, it is indeed Yorkshire, where the tea is strong and the women are stronger

Gentlemen,

Mr. Martin our posts seem to have crossed. I think you’ll find Hebdon is quiet the the urbane cafe society now, one of Mrs. Adam’s and I’s trips out then on to Salts Mill for the bike shop (for me) and the home shop (Mrs Adam) and maybe a spot of lunch.

Adam

Gentlemen,

Apologies, Mr Adam– scouting about the interweb I see that Hebden Bridge has changed a heck of a lot since I last visited! I took it from Mr Terry’s post that he was hoping for a full English before we set off, which would have been most welcome, but on a Sunday my search couldn’t find a cafe in the town that opened early enough. If this is indeed the case, then a spot lunch at journeys end would be just the ticket!

Kind regards,

Martin

Chaps… I appreciate after my last unfortunate “shot at a lie in” incident, I fear I may be made to ride at the front in the wind for the first 10miles.… but is everybody stlill on for this Sunday considering the shocking weather report i’ve just looked at !… (or are we considering a rain delay until the following weekend ?)

Afternoon Gentlemen,

Sometimes one must grasp the nettle, sometimes one must get wet.

Having said that, this is Mr. Booster’s ride and I am happy to abide by his ruling.

Good evening Gentlemen

I am sure a drop of rain will not deter our avid members — the ride as far as I am concerned will go ahead as planned.

May I suggest some wet weather gear as a contingency?

Suggest we stick with the original plan of meeting up at 9am in Hebden Bridge, do the ride, followed by refreshments thereafter.

Mr MGCycle Chap — if there are strong winds I am more than happy to take the front — perhaps we could take turns (inspiration from the Tour!)

Look forward to seeing you all on Sunday.
