A thread, yes and a confession, although it wont be necessary for anyone who posts to compulsory confess Smile.….….…..

I get the ‘in the spirit’ (see other thread re SuA jaunt) however I had an occasion to visit the area of the start of said ride early today (as well as driving down ‘Roger Penny’ way) and thought I would take a drive on another part of the route. I’m glad I did. I not convinced my 6mi to work and back commutes are enough prepe for that on a three speed. I am going to look at getting into a place where 79mi is doable but it is more likely that I will look forward to starting with you chaps. I will also look forward to trying to finish with you also. But the bit in the middle Smile at this stage I will probably aim for the 47 mi route and let you catch me up near the end.

Biscuit Sir… you are just experiencing pre-ride nerves… you will be amazed at how much easier it is to ride with 3 or 4 chaps. Technically just the drafting effect saves you 30% of the effort… then there is extra motivation, plus we wont be going that fast, and finally biscuit I’ll lend you some of my special DrMG caffeine laced stimulant !!!.… you’ll not only finish the ride, you’ll probably run home as well.… Wink

(and you’ve still got 3 months of training Man… pull yourself together Wink )

I know, I know.

What I need is stiff slap back and to across the face along with a nip of brandy Laugh

But seriously, while its all in the mind — its amazing how much mind is in the legs.….…. I drove down Blissford Hill today and felt like the car was going to fall onto its roofSmile (as you can see the money lavished on the sports psychology course has been well spent)Laugh

The last long ride I did was the IOW Randonnee (nearly 3000 feet climbed in 68 miles) but then I was on my back (explantion needed? Trice Qnt, bit like a chaise longue and without the smoking hat) and I had several more of those gear things.….

I am trying to get into the mindset of - it will be hard but enjoyable (47mi falls into this cat especially on a 3 speed ‘upwrong’). Rather than it will be hard and erh not enjoyable!

Dons ‘hairshirt’ and finds self flagellation device to get into the ‘proper’ mindset and scuttles off muttering.….….… “in the spirit of the bicycle, in the spirit of the bicycle, its all in the mind”

on a more serious note have you ever watched http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.….3M9w9fC7tg

The music is perfect (in my view) although some may feel it is unfortunate that there are no banjos or ukeleles, the filming and the voice overs are just so also.….….. and is inspiration — particularly from 5:33 on (approx 90 miles in)! It gets me every time.

Yes I’ve watched that before, epic stuff, brilliant… and to be fair, they are going up mountains !.…

…ok Biscuit to put your mind at ease, I’ve looked up my Garmin data from last years event.…

79.17miles

907m of elevation gain (so not that much over almost 80miles)

my road time was 4:23:04 (but I was trying hard).… my average heart rate 162bpm (remember im old 43 at the time) so that was 86% of my max.

(my official time was longer because I had 2 punctures !!!…)

average speed 18.1mph… (max 33.6mph)

but now the nice stuff… min elevation 3m… max only 134m … so no big hills to worry about

… so if you’ve done 3Kft before, in only 68miles.… the Rattler will be simple… We will simply ride at nice pace.… and push the damn things up Blissford Hill !!! and threaten the photographer at the top not to publish the photographs !

Then last year went from Lands end to that place up in Scotland , now doing that on a Guv’nor would be something

It certainly wasnt Ade my goodfellow !… it was on a unaturally light American Specialized bicycle, with lots of very slick japanese gears. I dont think Ive ever managed to get our lovely English steel machine over 15mph for more than about 5mins.… Smile

Fossil Sir you’re a LEJOG  !!!… I raise my glass of disaronno to you Sir.…

…and yes it would be epic on a Guv’nor.… It has crossed my mind (usually as a consequence of the aformentioned disaronno), to do a C2C though

Indeed that would be something.

For many a long year I have wanted to do LEJOG or a JOGLE, I was going to do it on a Trice Qnt, I think if it were to be done on a Guv’nor then it would be next year for me (obviously).

It would be done in 10 days because of work (more a dash, get it done sort of thing see Mick F’s comments on the CTC forum for background). If it were to be one done as a liesurely tour then I shall wait until I retire.….…..

Oh yes, nearly 900 miles in 10 days.….….……niceSmile 80 odd miles day after day after day after day.….. Laughperhaps I shall look at the SA 8 speed conversion this winterWink

Gentlemen,

18.1 miles per hour! Gulp, erm, well Mr MGcC, I will need several litres of your finest “DrMG caffeine laced stimulant” plus a tow rope to get anywhere near that velocity.

I have no doubt that I will be pushing my machine up Blissford Hill too.

I need a lie down.

Not to worry Mr Senior, I was pushing myself very hard on my race bike last year.… I would for sure not be able to get anywhere near that velocity on the Guv, or in fact have the will to do so…
