Gentlemen,

As is the general consensus amongst us, what we have here is a first rate online community. I for one feel honoured to have made the acquaintances of some very fine fellows, and to lose that connection would be nothing short of tragic.

It is clear that the Guvnor Owners’ Club in it’s current form will come to an end on 28th September, as has been discussed elsewhere in recent posts. But fear not, Gentlemen, plans are afoot for the construction of a new site whose purpose is to take up the baton from the treasured GOC; with links to dedicated micro-sites from the likes of Flickr, Twitter and Facebook.

In the form of a bridge from the old world to the new, you may want to take a look at the Facebook page that will link to this new forum once it goes live:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/.….8049316773

Give it a ‘Like’ if you have a Facebook account, and you will be duly updated on the latest goings on.

Kind regards,

Martin

Splendid news . Splendid indeed .

What, everything? The night I came home from Pongo Twistleton’s birthday party and mistook the standing lamp for a burglar?

Ah, good evening Mr Terry. I’ll try and update you, if I can.

The Guvnor Owners’ Club domain is up for renewal on 28th September, and without that domain being registered for another period, the GOC will cease to exist. Attempts have been made over the last few months as to James’ intentions for the future of this forum, but unfortunately little or no information has been received.

Rather than lose this community that has been built up over the years, it has been agreed that the only way to keep it going is to build another site. This is the reason for the link on Facebook, to capture as many members as possible during the transition from the GOC to the new Guvnor’s Assembly.

I do hope you will join us, good fellow!

Kind regards,

Martin

Evening Gentlemen,

Mr. Terry, It had been mentioned in other threads, basically the domain registration for this site expires on the 28th September. Despite emails, text messages etc the sites founder, James remains resolutely tight lipped about his plans for the site.

A few of us have decided behind the scenes that the Guvnor site is a thoroughly enjoyable place to spend a bit of time in the evenings and as such are crashing along like bulls in a china shop trying to sort something out to maintain some continuity for the Guvnor site.

There is always the possibility that James will re-new the domain registration and hosting, however as I have said we are not privy to this information.

None of our actions reflect in anyway upon James, it is after all his original site and vision that got the ball rolling in the first place and I am certainly very glad that he did. I have met some great people from this site and had some brilliant (and not so brilliant) rides organised via this site, hopefully we’ll capture the spirit of the existing site and develop it over time.

Regards,

Adam

Gentlemen, I’ve found this to be an excellent, informative and friendly site. A credit to it’s founder and it’s members.

Please keep me informed, I believe you have my e-mail address and ‘phone numbers, Martin and Adam.

On a personal note, I hope to be Guv’nor-ing again soon.

Ride on!

Hello,

personally, I don’t want to be on “facebook” or other sort of community of that style, but I’am O.K. to continue on a new forum.

So, I agreed you to inform me when a new site was created. If it’s necessary I can communicate my personnal mail to that.

Thank you very much.

Regards

Ian of Bordeaux.

In the case of James don’t re-new this site and, perhaps, read the forum by time I want to give my salute and thanks to him.

A very good evening to you M. Ian,

Of course, Sir– social networking sites are not to everyone’s taste, this link merely just one of a number being utilised as a ‘catch all’ should some members miss out on vital information during the crossover period.

I have said it before and will gladly say it again, my heartfelt thanks go to Mr James for bringing such a community together. I am very new to cycling, and in the seven months since purchasing my Guvnor I can honestly say I couldn’t wish to have met a nicer bunch of people, both online and in ‘real life’, all as a consequence of James setting up this forum. And for that alone, the dear fellow gets a heartiest doff of the cap from myself.

Nothing would please me and many others more to see the GOC continue as it is, but with the deadline drawing ever nearer, action had to be taken swiftly to ensure the membership remains intact to enable us to converse as we do now.

M. Ian, we will look forward to hearing your valued contributions. We shall most certainly keep you posted.

Kind regards,

Martin

One & All,

Martin and Stuart (MGcC), I appreciate you posting the ‘Facebook’ and ‘Twitter’ links but I do hope they will only be a temporary bridge to the ‘new’ website. My concern is that it may fragment our fraternity, with some members preferring to go down the social network route rather than a ‘proper’ website.

I’m with Ian on this, in that I’ve no wish to get involved in these social network sites.

Another concern is what happens to all the content of the current GOC site, if the plug is pulled on 28th. September, just disappear into the ether? I’m guessing it will.

The foregoing is not intended to criticise or cause offence. I’m simply expressing my thoughts and concerns with the direction it looks like we are about to take.

If any of you fellow members have any thoughts and/or concerns then perhaps now is the time to say, so we can move forward together ‘One & All’.

Safe rides, Geoff  ‘DW’.

Fear not Mr Fenrir and Mr Wheeler, the Facebook and Twitter accounts are merely accompaniments to the main forum. They will be used to alert members of forthcoming events, interesting posts et al. for those that use social network sites. The new forum will always be at the centre of all this, a ‘proper’ website, just like the original GOC.

As regards the content of the GOC, Mr Wheeler, I have little knowledge on how these things work. Looking at it logically, if the domain isn’t renewed, then I cannot see how it can be accessed via the internet. Perhaps someone with a bit of know-how could clarify this?

Kind regards,

Martin

I think the domain owners put a placeholder webpage instead of the GoC frontpage with “http://www.guvnorsclub.com is up for sale.” or something along those lines.

Seen it a few times in the past. Or the webpage will refusing to load seems to be another method.

Morning Gentlemen,

Eleven a.m. and still no work completed…

To clarify a few points raised, as Martin says the aim with the Twitter and Facebook as to act as an immediate point of contact should things go horribly wrong very quickly. They will also act as a means of publicising the new site six, degrees of separation and all that most people aren’t aware that this site actually has a Twitter page.

The core interest will stay with the new site, if users choose not to follow the Twitter or Facebook sites they will not miss anything that isn’t on the core site, on a personal level I still don’t have a Facebook account.

With regards to the existing content and domain name, in effect these are two separate entities, it is possible to purchase a domain name without hosting and conversely hosting without a domain (although this would be slightly pointless). On the on the 28th of this month James will have had the option to re-new any of these.

If he has renewed the domain name and the hosting the site will continue exactly as it is now, if he renews just the domain name (a much cheaper option) future visits to the site will show a place holder but no actual content. If he chooses not to renew anything the site will disappear, with the http://www.guvnorownersclub.com domain name becoming available again 30 days later. At this point we should be able to purchase the new domain name and point it at our new site or vice verse.

With regards the existing content, if James does not renew the hosting then everything will be lost to the public, although it is possible but slightly un-ethical to grab most of the existing site and download it onto your local PC.

I hope this answers your concerns, even if it doesn’t remove them.

Regards,

Adam
