I am a new Guv’nor owner and hope you don’t mind a northern rider joining in on the fun.  Love the Guv’nor but my home city of Sheffield is hilly.  So has any of the owners out there gone down the route of fitting a 22T sprocket to the 3-speed hub?  If so, did you have to lengthen the chain or if not does the rear drop out accomodate the extra size of the newly enlarged sprocket?

I have lowered gearing on a L3 Brompton which makes it go up the hills and not much of a slouch going down them eitherSurprised.

I too would welcome responses here, as prospective purchasers often cite hill ascendancy amongst their doubts.

Personally I have yet to be defeated on a single speed, but London is not Sheffield.

Hi,

I’d be tempted to go the other way … smaller chainring on the front & shorter chain …2 benefits …shedding weight & easily returned to it’s former setup (spare cranks & original chain) for if you visit Norfolk or some such flat place for fun & frolicks.

Just a thoughtSmile.

Thanks for the initial replies.

I will do a few commute runs and perhaps a couple of trips out into Peak Distsrict and just see how standard gearing goes.  The 22T sprocket is the easiest option to do a s changing rear sprocket is straightforward and brings the gearing down to 4″ above the Brompton.  Like exchanging chain rings this is also an easy mod to put back to factory standard if needed.

Hello Everyone and time for a little update.

The Guvnor has completed a weeks run to and from work (with a detour to the dentist) and this bike is getting under the skin!!  The low gear is bearable on the hills so I will stick with it for a few more weeks and see how the legs cope — seemed easier today so there could be hope.  The direct drive and high gear are though perfect for there intended roles so no complaints on these two and this bike has a good ace card up its sleeve.  It don’t arf go down hills like a rocket.

So if I go down the lowering the gear a a few inches I will keep you posted.
