Chaps, do any of you intend fitting mudguards at some point, as the fittings seem to be in the hole I was thinking to use for attachment? I wonder if theres a clamp style bracket available for the cordo or Andrews bullet?

Fenrir.….…..maybe I will look at the Pashley/MAPD mudguards if and when they appear,  in any case they can share the existing fixing hole/s with the lamp bracket, a longer bolt may be required. I don’t think a clamp bracket is available for the Cordo.….….safe riding, Geoff.

Of course, a longer bolt! So simple.

Good thinking Geoff.

Geoff, if you’re reading ..

I popped into Bobbins today and purchased one Cordo, as you suggested. It looks lovely! Definitely the best modern alternative I’ve seen so far. And yes, mine flashes too. Bobbins supplied me with a black bracket to fit the Guvnor, but I had to ask for a bolt, and they had no matching nut or washers. That aside (I can easily find my own), I fear I might also be missing an attachment for the top …

My question: how does one fix the light to the bracket in a pleasing and symmetrical way? As there are no instructions, the only way I can come up with results in a significant one-sided hang. The whole thing looks untidy, and a little unsecured. Do you think I might be missing something?

A close-up to illustrate:

Hello Morgan.….…..the light/bracket doesn’t come with any packing washers as I mentioned in my previous postings. I used black plastic washers/screw cups used for screw fixing car number plates, in conjunction with some metal washers, but any plastic or metal washers would also do the trick. Sandwich the lamp fixing tongue centrally between the black mounting bracket arms by placing washers both sides to pack the space equally either side, I also used an anti-vibration washer and nut to secure. You will also need to provide the nut, bolt and washers to secure to the cycle. Hope this all makes sense.….…..Geoff.

Ah! The light dawns!

Thank you Geoff, there was I thinking of washers for the fork only. Of course!

Also as a side note, Bobbin are looking for the black version I keep talking about. Placing one at the back seems very easy to do, and it doesn’t look half as ridiculous as I feared. I’ll post images when it is all done ..

Best, Morgan.

One more thing Geoff … the bolt Bobbin supplied is actually too wide, and too long. What would you say the correct size should be? I notice sjscycles.com supply a wide range of nuts and bolts, one of these perhaps?

Morgan.….….I think you will find the correct size is 8mm. The blackened domed head crosshead bolt in your photo looks the same as the one provided to me, neither too long or wide! Remember the bracket arms will pinch up a little when all the components are tightened up.

Note one of the bracket arms is threaded, hold the light and packing washers between the bracket arms, then screw and tighten this domed head bolt in that end first, using an anti-vibration washer (optional) between the bolt and the arm, this effectively fixes the bolt in place. The 8mm. flanged nut is then fitted to clamp/pinch all the components together, an 8mm. nut and washer could be used if you don’t have a flanged nut. You should be able to source components from any good hardware shop. Hope all this makes sense.….….safe riding one and all, Geoff.

Thank you again Geoff. That does make sense, yes. Only thing is, I was referring to the bracket-to-fork bolt, not the black bracket crosshead bolt in the photo. Bobbin fished me out an allen headed bolt from their box of spares, but it was too thick to pass through the drilled fork hole on the Guvnor:

The thread measures about 5mm, and 50mm long. (Apologies for the blurry photo, relying on my webcam tonight).

No doubt a quick trip to the hardware store, and a rummage, would sort things out.

Just to say, anyone looking for a fairly discreet rear light might do well to check out the RSP Astrum. It is very well built for a plastic light (the horror!), secures easily to the top of the seat stays, and gives out an ungodly amount of red light — both dispersed and focused, using two bright LEDs with separate lenses. Perhaps the brightest battery powered rear light I have ever used. All for a miserly £12.49 from Rutland Cycling, while stocks last.

I wonder if it’s worth compiling a list of lights, fittings, mudguards and other stuff with the links to appropriate websites? This could then be kept as a sticky on the forum for ease of reference. Same with the guvnor size / inside leg measurements chart.

Cheers

For those who want the minimalist look I have the sogreni light set in copper finish. Very discrete , look the part & are simple to fit ( clip ins)  & remove.

The copper finish really works with the Gov’nor .

Purchased from velorution with only a weeks waiting time ( for the copper)

Very good quality but no they don’t flash

Hi Oakman,

Are you serious sir? You do have the Sogreni lights!? I have not had any luck–this was months ago–procuring these little gems. Would you care to share where you purchased them? I would be most grateful! Thanks.

As for the Cat Eye, it is my standard issue light currently. However, mine is a slender tube with three lights in a circular pattern and a plastic-rubber-like strap that inserts into a friction clip to secure it around the bars; thus, it is smaller than the one in your posted pictures. I will post one later tomorrow.

Take care,

Gary (Calif Guv)

Hi Oakman,

Just saw the “velorution” in your post. I will check it out on-line; an English company maybe? I’m in Santa Cruz, CA. Will still post small CAY EYE pic as a reference comparison for those interested.

Ride safely and often,

Hi Oakman, I’ve just received a set of Sogreni lights for my Guvnor, but the lights have come with plastic clips and silicon straps only, and not the metal brackets/clips pictured on this page: http://www.sogreni.dk/Lights.php#

Did your lights come with the metal brackets/clips?

Thanks.

One & All,

This is just a thought for you members outside the EU and are keen on these Sögreni lights.

The ‘Value Added Tax’ that is applied to most goods and services within the EU is levied at a rate of 25% in Denmark, known locally as ‘MOMS’ it makes Denmark very expensive , I’ve recently been there so I know first hand!

So it may be worth sending an email to Sögreni to see if they will process orders without charging this tax outside the EU?

My personnal view, having seen these lights is they are of nice quality, they are a ‘be seen’ but no flash mode, rather than ‘to see’, and if you can purchase less the 25% MOMS that would make them a better value proposition.

Safe rides, Geoff.

For elegance.… I have seen no lighting better than on the below bike. Whilst probably not the best for seeing or being seen, they are beautiful.
