We seem to have postings appearing in the various Forum and Comment sections regarding suitable lights, so maybe it’s time to open this new topic to consolidate the subject. These are my thoughts, for what they are worth.

After scouring many websites and links I finally decided to go for the Cordo Castor front and Soma Silver Bullet rear lights. I personally think they look right, in the 1920/30’s Art Deco style, for the Guv’nor, and are good quality products. I would like to post photos of the lights in situ, but can’t fathom out how it’s done, so can any of you computer whiz-kid members advise me how I get images from ‘Pictures’ to GOC ‘Forum’ page?

Other lights mentioned are the Sogreni light set, I think they are a tad pricey, although they do look to be of nice quality, but they do not have a flash mode and are not easy to source in the UK. Maybe it’s taking the ‘less is more’ look a litle too far?

The Liix front light, which is sold under various guises, it’s the chrome front light with visor complete with bracket, which by the way isn’t long enough . I’ve seen this light and must say it’s rather cheap and nasty and not the quality I suspect a Guv’nor owner would want!

Safe riding one and all, Geoff  ‘Duchy Wheeler’.

Hello Geoff,

Just to say I’ve made a “How to post an image” thread. The post’s formatting came out a little skewed, and the forum won’t let me edit it any further, so while I contact James for help I hope you can match the text to the images, and make something out.

And then, we can talk lights!

Morgan.

Ooh, I’ll pop out to the garage with my camera shortly. I’ve got some beauties.  I’m a regular at cyclejumbles and earlier this year I bought a number of old lights.  The front one is big shiny and chrome, NOS still in original box from around the 1970’s (I’d guess).  It’s not that good, but it’s impressive.

The rear one was a “chrome plastic” dynamo light, a similar shape to the front and much smaller.  I took it apart, replaced the innards with some LED workings and fitted it onto my “other” guv’nor-a-like (that’s a whole other thread).  Again, not massively effective, but it does the job.

Pics later, promise

Well I’ve fitted my cheap bullet light.

Sorry about the rubbish pics but you get the idea.

I love the look of it though.….

Glad to say “How to post an image” is fixed! It’s much clearer now. I’ve also added a bit on aligning text and images (the new step 8). If you need any steps clarifying, do say.

Morgan.

Andrew: Very nice. Doesn’t look bad at all, and just about fits! I might prefer it without the visor, a little 1950s for me, can it be removed? Also, what is the quality like? Chromed plastic case? Sturdy bracket? Does it have a flash function?

Geoff: Looks well made, and smaller than I expected. Still a little “rocket era” for me. Does it flash? And how is the battery life? Also, I can just about make out your Cordo Castor at the front … some pictures of that, front, side and top angles, would be super!

Morgan, its chromed plastic and the visor does not come off. It has a 3 way LED which is quite bright, or you can choose a flashing mode.

The bracket needs a bit of modification (I used a hammer, and 2 pairs of pliers Laugh) such that it now has more reach enabling the light to project horizontally. Without such fettling, it points downwards, or ribs against the head tube Pashley badge.

It is by no means a high quality product, but it is solidly attached (did my commute to work yesterday and its still in place) and it works, and I like the retro styling.

For £25 or so, I’m happy with it.

Morgan.….… image of the Cordo Castor, as requested. This light along with the Soma rear light have a flash mode and both are supplied with  brackets and batteries, they are LED so battery life should be good also both are very nice quality items.

With regard to style, ‘moderne’  which became know as ‘Art Deco’  from the 1920/30’s, this was the age of streamline designs, so ‘rocket’ and ‘bullet’ would be very appropriate descriptions for items that would be complimentary to the Guv’nor style .….…Geoff

Andrew: I’m all for hammer modifications. And for £25, sounds like it does the job. Perhaps Pashley will surprise us and persuade Sturmey Archer to remake their old lights for the 21st century.

Geoff: Very nice! I particularly like the ridged glass/plastic at the front. And a black bracket suits the Guvnor well. Is it standard issue, or do I have to make a special request from Bobbin? They mention supplying brackets for forks on request. I suspect with a little hammer modification, one of these could be made to fit the rear seat stay as well, plus one red filter equals a ridiculously enormous rear light. I’ll do my best to persuade Bobbin to source the black/chrome model, and try it on, post some pictures.

Morgan.….….I’ve found this photo which shows a better side view of Cordo Castor and bracket. Since photo was taken the ‘cyclometer’ has been removed from front axle and Pashley wing nuts fitted, rear Cat Eye light replaced with Soma and Brooks bag now resides on the front bar.….…..Geoff.

A more adventurous approach: Has anyone seriously considered rebuilding the front wheel to add a dynamo hub? Perhaps sacrilegious, but the idea occurred that a dynamo lamp such as the Schmidt E6 fixed onto one of the fork tubes might look fairly unobtrusive, and keep the top of the bike uncluttered. A secondary low power light could be added low down on the rear seat stay.

Sturmey Archer X-FDD hubs can be had for £65, £20–30 for a wheel rebuild, and another £60 for each light — an expensive job, but worth considering.

Thank you Geoff, the spacing looks just right, it fits very well. Certainly the current best option on the first hand market.

Most likely my hopes for a rear Castor are too high, your photo makes me think the aesthetics of a lamp that size on the front and rear might look very odd indeed. Still, at £20 I may give it a go in any case, until something better comes along.

Morgan.….……Bobbin Bicycles supplied the suitable black bracket, the price was £20 inc. + £5 p&p, purchased mid Feb., it is made from good quality chromed plastic, the front section removes by way of a screw on the underside to expose the internal electrics and batteries (2 x AA). However you will need you obtain some packing washers to use between lamp and bracket, I used two black plastic washers used for screw fixing car registration plates, one either side of the lamp fixing hole, plus a suitable nut and bolt to fit to hole above front forks. There’s no mention of the flash mode on the instructions and Bobbins didn’t know either, but if you hold the on/off button down for about 5 secs. it goes to flash mode! .….……safe riding, Geoff.

Yes, I heard rumours that the Castor flashed, glad to hear they do indeed. I’ll pop into Bobbins at some point over the next few weeks, see what I find.

I don’t suppose anybody is watching this on eBay?

Vintage, metal and glass construction, battery powered, fully working…

Ideally, I’m looking for something like this, but in better condition: the old Sturmey Archer black and chrome light

(currently on sale for $75 at http://www.bikeville.com)

And a nice picture from Sheldon Brown:

I love the more rounded, less pointed style, and the more distinct bevel at the front. Basically, I think the light in James’ post “How to Light in Style” is pretty much perfect. If only I could find one for sale.

Andrew, just a thought, but perhaps the black bracket Bobbin Bicycles provided Geoff would also fit your light … give you a bit more space between the back and the Pashley badge. I imagine they won’t charge much. I’ll be popping down there myself in a few weeks if you’d like me to ask for a spare.

Geoff, I hope you don’t mind, but something I should have mentioned in the “How to post an image” guide. I notice your photos are quite large in their original size. I should have made a point about reducing sizes. I’ll make a note of it in the guide.

EDIT: Ok, added a note at the bottom of step (4). Hope it makes sense.

Also an off-topic question about your Brooks saddle cover: can it be used inside out? I need something a little more durable than a plastic bag to keep my seat dry in the rain, but fear any overt branding will attract the wrong sort of attention in London. The saddle is worryingly attractive uncovered, it needs hiding!

Thanks again, Morgan.
