Oh you are all copy cats!! i think the straps on the bars look great, but Alex is correct you will need to ask for a bigger diameter as they are very tight and if you run a brake cable underneath then this will increase it more. i like the look of the Lauterwassers but am happy with the North Roads for now.
I have done a few more bits to my bike, watch this space
I am very pleased to report that I was successful in my bidding and I am now a proud owner of a set of Lauterwasser handlebars (cue fevered wringing of the hands and a wicked glint in one’s eye). £40.50 so it’s a little over the original RRP. But I can live with that. At least I won’t have to wait 4–7 weeks for Soma to make some more.
Mr Robot, your Guv has been an inspiration as has Mr James’ from down under… as they say: imitation is the sincerist form of flattery. And many thanks for echoing Mr McF’s advice on enquiring after custom made bar straps from Walnut… the thought hadn’t crossed my mind that they will not be able to accommodate the padding and the brake cables. However, just as I read your posts yesterday and was about to make contact with Geoff over in Portland, I got an e-mail from him letting me know that my straps were winging their way across the Atlantic!
It was always my intention to get a second set from him for my single speed… so I might use these for the SS and order another wider set for the Lauterwassers. I shall see how it goes.
Thanks again for your invaluable advice, chaps– it really is very much appreciated!
I beleive Gentlemen that Soma also produce the Major Taylor handlebar.… for those interested, here is a picture of the great world champion himself, Marshall Taylor, AKA the Major, AKA The Worcester Whirlwind…
MGCC, One & All.….….……well yes they do, see my posts on page 1 of this topic, and of course Pashley fit Major Taylor ‘bars as original equipment on the Guv’nor Plus Two.
I personally prefer the look of them to that of the Lauterwasser ‘bars, to my mind they are more in the style of a path racer.
That said, the standard inverted North Road ‘bars would still be my choice, a good compromise between style and comfort.
I am in need of a little guidance. Whilst waiting for the leather wraps to arrive from the States, I have decided to fit the Lauterwasser ‘bars to my Guv and attach the Pashley grips on to these for the time being. Trouble is, I can’t remove them from the North Road bars… I’ve tried everything, but they appear to have an almighty grip and are unwilling to move. Any suggestions?
My I suggest a little hairspray betwixt the grip and the bar? Accurate placement can be made using the fine hose that come with a can of WD40 or some such lubricant.
Many thanks for the rapid reply, I was just about to chuck in the towel… ‘frustration’ doesn’t begin to describe the way I am feeling at the moment! Hairspray you say, I’d never have thought it. Right, I’m off to the Co-op…
my french seller explain to me that when I want to get out the Guvnor leather and plastic grip I can use a piece of wood and a hammer to push the grip hammering softly on the brake metal clamp ( “de-screwed” off course ).
Many thanks for your advice, M. Ian. That coupled with Mr Adam’s suggestion finally relieved the North Road ‘bars of their grips and were successfully fitted to the Lauterwassers. Gentlemen, I thank you. Shortly after completing the job and standing back in admiration (a quiet ‘phwoar’ left my lips on more than one occasion, I have to admit), my postie delivered the leather wraps from Walnut.
I’ve now decided to leave the Pashley grips on the Lauterwassers (it’s not that I’m easily defeated y’understand, I just like how they show off the chrome sweep of the handlebars most effectively), so I’ll be using the leather wrap on my single speed autumnal project… I’m very much leaning toward the Major Taylors for that one.
As for the nearly full can of hairspray I have left over, it won’t go to waste. Perhaps I may engage it in taming my comb over in a Bobby Charlton stylee.
