Hi guys,

I’m a new member and would like to share some images with you of some new steel Soma “Lauterwasser” bars I’ve just fitted to my beloved Guv’nor, what do you think? There are some more images and a bit of chatter at:

http://www.perthvintagecycles.…..ogspot.com if you’re interested.

They’re not for everybody.….. but do offer more hand positions when riding.

Kind regards,

James

Michael2500.….….welcome to the GOC.

I do like the look of your Guv’nor’s new bar and stem arrangement, also the informative web link. These “Lauterwasser” bars are very similar to the “Major Taylor” bars that Pashley are fitting to the Clubman Urban and the upcoming Guv’nor 2.

Safe rides ‘One & All’.

PS: If I might suggest, a nice pair of my Gripfast wing nuts would be just the ticket for your front wheel hub! DW

Duchy, thanks for the helpful advice regarding the Guvnor wingnuts.…..remember posting a pair of wingnuts to Perth, Western Australia, about two weeks ago? Well that was me, and I got them yesterday, I just haven’t had a spare moment to fit them.….good looking wingnuts though!

Thanks

James

Evening Gentlemen,

An interesting modification, I’ve being toying with the idea of something along those lines with bar-end brake leavers, but Mrs Adam isn’t very keen on the asthetics.

As an aside, nice blog. I’ve not read it all yet but your enthusiasm comes across.

Regards,

Adam

One & All,

Sorry about the blank post above, but I was trying to put in a web link but it didn’t seem to work!

Anyway, regarding the background history of “Major Taylor”, see my post above. If interested go to the Home Page then to the link for “Bishops Path Racer” website, then scroll to post dated Friday, December 4, 2009 - Marshall “Major“Taylor.

Safe rides.

Kind gents, I’m just after a bit of feedback really.…. are these bars within the Guvnor spirit, or are they such that they compromise the feel of what the manufacturer intended.

The bars are good to ride with and are very comfortable, and like a new hair style they change the look of the bike dramatically.… but do they alter the look of the bike to a point where it discredits the Guvnor flavour? I hope not, but would like your opinion…

Regards, James.

…and here’s another image for topic refreshment.

G’Day James,

In my opinion the bars sit perfectly well with the Guv, if you rumage around the site a little you’ll be able to find yet another Pashley prototype with very similar bars (Soma Major Taylor’s). As with all bikes I think they require a little bit of work to make them your own. I’m half hartedly looking for an online UK stockist.

The only possible problem with your set up is you appear to have a few too many gears to choose from.

Adam

James,

For what it’s worth, I think your handlebars look superb and are in keeping with the spirit of the Guv!  Am sorely tempted myself.  Would they fit the existing stem?

Also good to have a choice of hand positions for those longer rides.

Am I dreaming that they are better looking than those on the new Guv 2?  They are slightly different, are they not?  Or is it a matter of perspective from different photos??

Kind regards,

Alex

PS Ignore Adam’s gentle remark re gears; he obviously has not experienced the feeling of the wind in your hair as you tear along in third!!

Dear James,

In my humble opinion your Guvnor looks excellent with the Lauterwasser bars and I think they complement the look and spirit of the Guv nicely.

I had never seen those bars before, but I really like the look of them so that I am contemplating to use them on one of my next projects.

Kind regards from Germany,

Hartwig

p.s. …and I am with Alex regarding the “wind-in-the-hair” thingy…Wink

Evening Gentlemen,

It’s been a while since I’ve felt the “wind in my hair” regardless of speed.

Sorry I forgot to post this link earlier http://www.somafab.com/bars.html they do export to Europe, but the “at source” reasonable price nearly doubles after p&p.

Adam

One & All,

For Soma in the UK try Hubjub — web: http://www.hubjub.co.uk  , email: sales@hubjub.co.uk  , they have supplied a number of GOC members with the Soma ‘Silver Bullet’ rear light, see my post in Forum — Lights. No doubt they could supply the various style handlebars including the ‘Lauterwasser’ and ‘Major Taylor’. I found them very helpful, they import Soma parts directly to the UK from the US. They will order parts they don’t normally stock if requested, which they add to their regular stock orders.

Safe rides, DW.

PS for Adam, ditto for the “wind in the hair”. Not fly away, but flown away!! DW.

Thankyou for you kind words gentlemen, I think we all like to customise our beloved Guv’nors just a liittle.…

I wonder if Pashley are considering slight changes to the next standard Guv’nor model as time progresses, or will they continue the “same — same” approach! I know its hard to improve on perfection!

Happy riding..

Adam,

Thanks for this.  Am sorely tempted but am only on day one of my Lenten thrift drive.…

Michael 2500,

Would the Lauterwassers on the stock Guv stem leave the grips slightly further forward?  This would suit me as my saddle is about as far back as I can safely set it.  I’m looking for an excuse to purchase here!

Kind regards,

Alex

Sir Alex,

By comparing the bars side by side and measuring the forward reach difference the Lauterwasser bars will give you about an extra 75mm (or 3 inches) of forward reach compared with the stock bars if you retain your existing stem.

Luckily the existing stem can be used because the Lauterwassers also have a bar clamp diameter of 25.4 mm, the stock levers and Pashley grips also fit perfectly.

The stock bars were a good fit for me to start with.…. so to accomodate the difference in reach I had to change my standard 130mm (centre to centre) Nitto Technomic stem to a stem with a centre to centre measurement  of 60mm, thus bringing the grips back to where they were with the stock bars.

There are two options for the bars — polished aluminium or chromium plated steel. They look identical, although the steel ones feel alot more solid and will last forever (steel is real!).

I hope I’ve given you enough ammunition…

PS I love the wind in my hair when shooting along in third gear.…single speeds are so yesterday!

Sir James,

What a wonderful thing the internet is!  Courteous correspondence with a chap half way around the world, with one thing in common: a love for a fantastic bike!

Thank you for taking the time to share this information.  Ammunition aplenty, this removes all obstacles to the deal… except my Lenten resolve…

I sport a 20.5″ frame Guv (3 speeder as discussed!) but am short of leg and long of torso so the extra reach should suit me.

Not sure whether to bid as Adam kindly shared his Ebay research on the forum.  These one are steel, so let’s keep it real!

At least the auction is Bid Now so no unseemly bidding wars with a fellow Guv owner.  Or is this tantamount to a cartel??

Thanks again,

Alex

PS Just raced my wife (in the car) home from a cafe and won.  Could not have done it on a single speeder!

Good Afternoon Gentlemen,

Alex, if you want the bars please feel free to go for them, if not I may make a rash purchase, either way one of us should get them and please don’t feel like you are taking them from under me. I am happy to give you first refusal.

With regards to singlespeed, can I point you in the direction of Sir Chris Hoy, and the delectable Vicky Pendalton et al. Both of these (and many other Olympians) manage perfectly well with one speed. By the way I am not for one moment suggesting I’m in, or anywhere near the same elite group of athletes, and if I ever do bump into Vicky at the velodrome I’ve got an “ice breaker” ready and waiting.

Regards,

Adam

Adam,

Very  kind re the Lauterwassers on auction.  I will try and hold off for now and let fate intervene… we shall see.

Regarding your eminent single-speed luminaries: I think my silhouette would block out either or both of them, except possibly Sir Chris in the thigh region! I am 47 and 15 plus stone and had not cycled for years before clapping eyes on the Guv.  Now I use it daily for commuting, shopping errands and a little quality ‘me time’.

Alex

Alex McF, One & All,

I note that the eBay offering is BIN price of £54.00 post free, Hubjub are asking £45.00 for the Some steel 38cm. Major Taylor handlebar. I don’t know whether this includes p&p., but I guess it would still be cheaper?

I’m sure Will of Hubjub could get the Soma steel Lauterwasser handlebars for about the same price, they are very similar. By the way the Soma steel Major Taylor handlebars are available in 38/40/44/46/48 cm. sizes, and it looks like these bars could be a Hubjub stock items, could be worth checking out if interested.

See my post above, dated 4 March, for Hubjub contact details.

Safe rides, DW.
