Have any of you fellow riders any experience on fitting kickstands: makes, models, types, problems etc.?

Geoff, you probably saw Ian from Darwin had fitted one in the blog post called The Martin Shift. I understand he is away travelling at the moment but may be able to advise when he gets back.

Here is a shot we didn’t use showing the Pletscher stand fitting, with black protective canvas:

Having looked at what’s available and liking the look and quality of what’s fitted as standard on my wife’s Princess Sovereign, I’ve gone for the Pletscher standard KS04 kickstand with the rubber foot SG25, which is sold as a seperate item!  I sourced it online, through Simpson Cycles, excellent price, service and product. It was very easy to fit and would recommend.

Safe riding, Geoff.

Great news. And always heartwarming to hear a positive review of a proper, family-owned bicycle shop like Simpsons.

One and  all.….…the Pletscher KS04 and rubber foot SG25, see post above. It’s proved to be one of the most useful and practical components I’ve fitted.….…..safe riding, Geoff.

When looking for a Kickstand I came across the Atran Velo Mego. It functions very well and I really like its plain looks. The original screw was much too long so I have replaced it with an allen screw. It was also possible to route the brake cable between the chainstay of the frame and the fixing screw of the stand without squeezing it.

Had to take the pictures in the basement since we have some really horrible weather today.

Kind regards from Germany,

Hartwig

Well I like the idea myself, only last week I gouged the side of my Brooks as my Kona slid down a wall, freestanding sounds like a good idea after that, especially with regards to bar ends & grips of this quality .… about a week to go till mine arrives, towpath dreams fill my slumbers.

Far Cry Toff.….….I fully agree with schloopfeng. A kickstand is the one item I would without doubt recommend fitting. The Guv’nor is based on a path racer, but I gather from this website most owners seem to use their cycles for commuting or leisure purposes, for which the kickstand is an essential and practical piece of kit.….….…safe riding one and all, Geoff.

What Ho,.…..Whilst acknowledging the fact that we all march to the beat of a different drummer,  I would concede that a kickstand on a ‘Gentleman’s sports bicycle” is an essential item of equipment to be considered only after the fitting of bar-end streamers, a set of training wheels and a little windmill doohickey for the handlebars.

But then it wouldn’t do if we were all the same, would it now?.…TTFN,…The Toff.

That lot’ll do me nicely.

Don’t really consider the Guv a “sports bicycle”, more a genteel way to get around.

Gentlemen,

This American says “no” to kickstands. It’s bad enough our brand of feral and vacuous politics has started to scratch the venerable patina of substantive policy dialogue you Brits have by infecting your elections with political advisors tantamount to corporate brand managers. No sirs; I cannot allow such a slide to continue! Therefore, no kickstands. I have found that using a piece of padded leather between the seat and wall works quite well–looks cool too.

Take care,

Gary

One and all.….……since when were kickstands the preserve of the Americans anyway? Pashley fit them as standard equipment on some of their models.  Aussies, Germans and some Brits seem to be looking at the practicalities of ownership and are singing from the same hymn sheet on this one!.….….safe riding, Geoff.

Hi Folks,

I am actually thinking of finding a decent twin legged stand myself .… but only if it suits the look of the bike .… reason being that at times my Guv (when it finally gets here Embarassed) is going to need to work hard hauling loads .… it’s going camping you see … & I do not use a car.

All my bikes work hard … this is my main workhorse in action:

As you can see I will fully appreciate the Guv when it sheds it’s loads for some  “our time” in the country … but the good times are earned, & getting the bike out into the country requires a lot of hauling .… but the payoff is always grand.

Top Hole, Old Chap,.….I ally myself to the remarks of the last speaker,…and commend those comments to The House.

What a spiffing day when we are fortunate enough to hear a Voice of Reason from the Former Colonies.

I have often had the pleasure of riding those sun-soaked “paths”, in your Golden State, 17 mile Drive, Hollister, Laguna Seca, The PCH thru Big Sur, clam chowder at Stagnaro’s on the pier, riding through eucalyptus groves on the Redwood HWY North towards San Jose,…Happy Days.

Kickstands are an epidemic in the USA, where, I suppose 3 or 4 pounds of weight are of no consequence to the average rider’s mass, but I applaud both your resistance to the bally things, and the attempt to increase their numbers on thoroughbreds over here.

Oases that eschew this instrument of eyeball torture in your State to be recommended, are Velo Pasadena, in the City of Angels,..and Laguna Cyclery in Laguna Beach, both purveyors of fine lightweight bicycles, both excellent artisans who would rather shove wasps up their bottoms than affix a kickstand to a fine bicycle.

In answer to the Duchy Chappie,…I’m afraid that the day I look to Australia and Germany for style and elegance, .….the Devil will be ski-ing to work

Far Cry Toff.….…..but you obviously look to Pashley for style and elegance! They, along with many others consider kickstands a suitable and practical item to fit to their cycles. At the risk of causing an international membership incident it may be diplomatic to draw a line under this topic and agree to disagree.….…..safe riding one and all, Geoff.
