Hi all,

Whilst cycling home from work yesterday I noticed an annoying clicking sound coming from the rear wheel. It only happens in 3rd gear and only when I’m pedalling. I’ve tried adjusting the the gears but its still there.

Anyone any ideas please?

Thanks

Ross

Good evening Ross.….….……I suspect the clicking is more than likely the Sturmey Archer hub in need of a tweek, they can be quite sensitive to adjustments. More detailed information can be found on the procedure on:  http://www.sheldonbrown.com/st.….r/adj.html  , hope this is of help.….….……safe riding one and all, Geoff.

PS, I marked the end of the indicator rod, see page 11, fig.1(3) of the Guv’nor Owner’s Manual, with some white Tippex to make it easier to see for accurate adjustment.

Hi Geoff

I did a bit of tweaking as per instructions on the website you suggested and, yes, we’re running smoothly again.

Thanks a lot

Just got the Guv on Friday I have a clicking noise in 2nd and 3rd gear much like you get when you free wheel only this is when pedeling. My wife’s new poppy has the same thing any ideas if they just need time to bed in or does this sound like the gears need adjusting.

Anybody have a similar experience from new?

Del.….….……Sturmey Archer gears generally will need an initial adjustment due to cable stretch etc.. Check out my comments and link on post dated 8:28pm, 15 June.….….……safe rides one and all, Geoff.

Hi thanks I have tried adjusting as suggested but no matter what I do 1st gear runs completely silent 2nd clicks when pedaling and 3rd even more.

Should the 3 speed be silent in all gears?

Is this a problem I should get looked at or just how a hub gear runs?

Del.….….……paragraph four of the Sheldon Brown’s Sturmey Archer 3 speed gear adjustment detail, see above website, suggests ticking sound in 2nd. and 3rd. is in order.….….……safe rides one and all, Geoff.

Hearing a clicking noise in 2nd and 3rd is perfectly normal with a Sturmey Archer 3 speed.

I like it !!
