Hello all,

I don’t have a Guvnor, but I have just ordered a Pashley 26 Roadster Sovereign which I’m excitedly waiting for.  I did a bit of a search around the net but came up with nothing and then found your forum, so thought you guys might be able to share with me a few ideas about helmets… Does anyone have any suggestions on helmets which go well with Pashleys?  Seems a shame to have such a beautiful bike and then end up having to use some modern and horrible looking cycle helmet.  At the moment I’m looking at BMX/skate helmets as they seem the most understated.

Anyone want to share what they use, or want to make a suggestion?

Thanks!

Good evening, would suggest checking the likes of Bobbins Cycles and Velorution in London.

Have alternative types of titfers for all people.

Of course, one could be very different and go the polo helmet route? Roxtons of Cirencester

are most obliging.

Good luck.

Ride on!

Thanks — great links!  The Bern helmets on Velorution might be just what I’m looking for.  Not sure I’m brave enough to go the Polo option but nice suggestion anyways…

The ones issued to the RAF in WWII fit the bill, in my opinion, a little jiggery-pokery by a sparky and they can be made to work with an iPhone thingy.

Wearing one with goggles and staring at motorists without blinking, has the added advantage of ensuring that you are given a very wide berth, in my experience.

.…and a pith helmet in the Tropics,…of course..

I will wade in here

Don’t ride with iPods cellphone earpieces etc.

You need to hear what is coming up behind you.

Road cyclists with iPods here is rural Surrey are a bloody menace. They never hear the car behind them.It gets very dangerous.

I always wear a helmet. I have read all the arguments from those who try to justify not having one.

In the end, the reality is “you on bicycle, other guy in 2 tonne car”.

Guess who wins. Whether it’s fair or not counts for nothing.

Protect your head as much as possible.

My colleague and friend is a surgeon who was found in a ditch unconscious, his helmet destroyed. He was concussed for several days, and a CT of his head showed a brain bleed. However he was back working 2 weks later with no long-term effects. Without the helmet he would probably be dead from a head injury.

I have other anecdotal stories too..

But I always make my kids wear a helmet, and I do too.

You just cannot trust that SUV-driving, iPod-fiddling distracted fool coming up behind you..

Good afternoon one and all,

Helmet wearing by cyclists is a controversial and often emotional subject”, quote from ‘Cyclecraft’, published by The Stationery Office, £12.50,   http://www.tso.co.uk

If I might suggest we should all read this book, it gives some very sound and balanced information on this and many other cycling topics.

Safe riding, Geoff.

PS, there’s even a North American Edition for you fellows in the colonies!

Good Evening,

Interesting points raised regarding the wearing of helmets, I for one have always worn one (well the past 20 + years anyway). Upon becoming the proud owner of The Guv for some reason when riding it this has became less of a habit, I will always wear one while riding in traffic busy areas but once out on the quiet lanes, converted rail lines and canals I feel a cap sits better with the mood created by the scenery and method of transport.

Regards,

Adam

Dubhousing,

Jolly well done!  I was considering getting one as well but feared some people might not appreciate me reclaiming the flag… then I saw your location…   Even more well done! Am now persuaded!

Long may you continue!

You might check out the Yakkay range, which seems to be easy to get, albeit pricey, in Europe and the UK.

Aha, yes. I like the Yakkay range very much. Thank you for the link, Mr Red. Now that I am cycling to work regularly, and with my place of work being a warehouse in the middle of a large industrial estate, I’m ‘sharing’ the road with some rather hefty trucks. I love my tweed caps and like Mr Adam, admit they look the part on quiet country lanes and canal paths… but I think the time has come for me to invest in a decent helmet… and these with the choice of covers appear to be just the ticket. Splendid.

Kind regards,

Martin

I’ve been considering a helmet, with London roads being what they are. Something simple and classic, if I were to invest.

One & All,

Cycle helmets were one of the features on the ‘Jeremy Vine’ BBC Radio 2 programme yesterday, Tuesday 19 May. It was half way through* the two hour schedule and is available on BBC iplayer, if you are interested.

Safe rides.

I must confess that I do not bomb around like I used to on my bicycles.

However, there was a bicycle shop in Redruth that had a severely cracked helmet

of mine on it’s counter for two years showing the merits of the product.

Going at full chat down one of Cornwall’s many hills my front tyre blew on

a right hand bend. Were it not for the titfer, I wouldn’t be writing this.….…

Mr MGcC, I’m going to call in at Bobbin Bicycles tomorrow to try on the Yakkay. Just a little worried that they state ‘large’ as 55cm-59cm, and I’m a 61cm in my bowler. Yes, I do have rather a large head. It has been likened to a medicine ball in the past.

Herr von Zach, inimitable style dear fellow.

Kind regards,

Martin
