Hi all,

It’s my first post on the forum since I starting reading the site/forum way back in Sept last year when I bought my Guvnor. Unfortunately (for myself) it’s a depressing one. Last week somebody hacked through my flex cable and made off with my saddle and seatpost. After spending the weekend getting over this horrific crime against my beloved bike (and the fact that it was uninsured!) I have started the process of fixing her up and have just bought a new B17 titanium. The problem I am now having is working out (a) what is the standard saddle post fitted to guvnors and (b) where I can buy one from. I’ve been told not to bother getting in contact with Pashley themselves as they are not much use and have tried Bobbins Bicyles who didn’t help much either. If anyone has had this problem before and could let me know what post they used/where they got it from that would be great.

Thanks

Afternoon Smoggy,

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate incident, it’s a shame that this sort of crime is practically accepted in our society.

I think the seat post is 27.00mm diameter and it looks very much like a cheap and nasty Kalloy post. I purchased a “Push” ‘post after mine became scratched when the post was forced down into the seat tube. I’ve not fitted it yet as I haven’t worked out a way to remove the branding.

Before you rush out and buy a replacement ‘post hopefully Mr. Wheeler will be along to confirm the seat post diameter.

Regards,

Adam

Removing branding can usually be done with a little acetone, or if you are brave, your

good lady’s nail varnish remover. If you are one of these chaps that cross dresses, you will no doubt

have a bottle of said liquid your dressing table.

Ride on!

Smoggy 1,

It must be gut wrenching to find your Guv’nor defiled by some low life.

Sadly I don’t have the information to hand on the make and diameter of the original equipment seat post, but agree with Adam that the quality isn’t up to much, being quite a soft alloy. It will readily gouge from any rough edges on the seat post clamp lug, and it’s only the work of moments to clean off the edges with a rat tail file!

Probably best to go for a better quality seatpost, hope you get things sorted soon.

Safe rides ‘One & All ’.

DW.

PS.…don’t forget to use some ‘Copper Ease’ anti-seize grease on the new seatpost.

Sir, http://www.spacycles.co.uk are listing the Kalloy seatpost at £12.00 in 27.0 x 300.

The size should be stamped on what’s left of the destroyed post.

Be sure to lightly smear the inside of the seat-tube with grease when installing the new one as a stuck seatpost is a terrible, terrible thing.

Evening Gentlemen,

Mr. Photographer, thank you for the tip a little nail varnish remover has proven to be just the job. Much better than my previous attempt using Mrs Adam’s Vera Wang, cheaper too.

Hi all,

Yeah it was pretty annoying, made even worse by the 30 minute standing cycle back home which followed! Thanks for all the help. I think i’ll have a look at the Push posts if the Kalloy isn’t up to much.

Thanks again

p.s. see http://www.sheldonbrown.com for advice re. greasing the inside of the tube, not the post.

It’s very likely the Guv’nor seat post is 27.2mm.  If any of you have calipers check the diameter for Smoggy1, or run down to your LBS and have someone measure it.  Most modern frames use this diameter.  The Kalloy Uno is a very good seat post, but the Nitto is of exceptional quality, albeit four or five times the price.

Just measured mine (3 speed — although that wont make any difference).….. 27 mm not 27.2mm just plain old 27 mm (vernier) which in real money makes it 1 inch and 1/16 of an inch.

Thanks for that. Yeah I’ve been trying to get hold of a 27.0 Nitto s65 seatpost or a Thomson Elite but it has been an absolute nightmare. Nitto’s are never in stock in 27.0 and supposedly Thomson have stopped producing the elite in silver.  Supposedly 27.2 is the standard nowadays with a lot of companies discontinuing production of the 27.0 models.

Yeah, it’s a shame that Pashley opted for the 27.0mm post, as most of the really nice posts are 27.2mm.  I believe I’d seek out a framebuilder who could ream the seat tube for a 27.2mm post.

Sir — I think you might find that the seat post is actually a 272mm (27.2) as this was the standard size for many years for the standard Reynolds 531 tubing — think you may find a 270mm a touch loose — suggest you measure it with some Vernier calipers to be on the safe side.

As for the saddle — obviously the Brooks B17 Titanium is fitted a standard — however a Brooks Swallow would look very nice  — it really depends what kind of mileage you are going to do — any of the Brooks road type saddles (B17, Professional etc) would be fine — and the Swallow OK if you are not planning to do large mileage as it is very likely to castrate you on rides anything over 10 miles!!

Do let me know if you intend to sing a soprano in the local church choir!!

Hi Wertie,

I have indeed decided to go for the Swallow, it arrived yesterday! Still waiting on the seatpost. Given that it will be “on show” a lot more than it would have been had I got another b17 titanium I am trying to find a nice one. It would have made finding one much easier if it was 27.2 but I understand from Biscuit that it’s a 27.0. I’m basically waiting for a shop near me to get some Nitto posts back in stock but it looks like I could be waiting another couple of weeks.

I did use a vernier to measure it but if you get the chance — measure one yourself if you can just in case I’m a ham fisted sort of Johnny! That said I’m pretty sure its 27.
