Ah. Yes. And I’ve just picked up my ‘summer weight’ worsted wool Plus Two’s from the tailor. Which now feel decidedly hot (temperature wise, might I add) upon hearing this news. Torrential rain certainly wasn’t welcome on Sunday, but 30 degrees bright sunshine beating down on us? Good god!

Gentleman, you would be well advised to gain a little distance from myself as the ride progresses… I fear I shall be leaving a trail of cycle specific garments in my wake.

Kind regards,

Martin

You may be hurling abuse at me.… but in 30degrees of heat… and a Brooks saddle, I’m going to be wearing my lycra 3 quarters,… though I’ll still be wearing my Giro Wool jersey (with a super wicking baselayer mind).… Wink

Dear god man — what were you thinking of!!!!!!! That said at least one of those in the pic could do with some Brooks saddle soap to take the wrinkles out :-)

Gentleman god speed and in the words of Sgt Esterhaus “…be careful out there” — seriously, water, wate, water but also only take the ‘Norfok’ off if really have to, remember there’s an appearance issue at stake :-)

Mr Biscuit, worry not! I shall not sully the good name of the GOC by disrobing en route. Although I may afford myself the pleasure of dropping the collar zip on my jersey by an inch or so if the temperature becomes too unbearable.

And Mr Fossil, Sir– the Nikon’s in the saddle bag.

Good to hear, when the mercury rises I often find changing my knee length stockings to a lighter gauge and wearing my bowler at a more jaunty angle keeps one cool but doesnt show Johnny foreigner that we’ve gone to pot!

Gentlemen, Thank you for a truly entertaining ride today, a heroic full GOC “tweed” performance from our own Mr Martin, not to mention a very useful demonstration of riding on the wind from Mr Booster.… and Good Luck to Young Booster with his Exams (a big prize rests on its outcome Wink , the young lad has witness’s now Wertie Smile )

…Thanks again chaps, sorry I missed you all at the end, I was sure I’d already missed you all when I was messing about eating me Pasta and drinking Tea !

Sir, thank you– I thought I had lagged way behind to be honest, chatting to all and sundry, not quite concentrating on getting the miles in… but it appears I had only just missed you at the finish line! ‘Twas a most pleasurable day indeed, and marvellous to have met you at last.

Thanks also to Mr and Master Booster… an heroic effort from these two fine chaps. Perhaps, Sir, you might convey to the rest of the club how you both managed to miss the ‘Short Route– that way’ and ‘Medium Route– thataway’ signs? Laugh 112 miles in the time you both completed it is something to be congratulated. A doff of the cap to you both!

It still amazes me how much praise the Guvnor attracts… many a serious cyclist atop a carbon fibre number made their good wishes known to me as they whizzed by. And each time it gave me quite a lift, I have to say.

Here’s to the next jaunt!

Kind regards,

Martin

Good morning Gentlemen.

Firstly may I say what a pleasure it was to meet Mr Martin and MGCycleChap yesterday at the Flat Out In The Fens — it was an honour to meet you both and ride with you for a while.…..that is until me and Booster junior managed to miss the signs for the short ride only realising that we were on the 112 mile jaunt once we had arrived at the second feed station!

By this time we had done 71 miles at a bit of a rip snorting pace — our average speed between the first and second feeds was 26mph! (not something I have managed since my racing days — many moons ago).

Needless to say there was much hilarity from other participants and the second feed when they had found out that we should have been on the shorther ride! However I was somewhat consoled by the fact that I was not the only one who had made the same “faux pas” — it was obviously “bad signage”!

Anyway after a pep talk to young Booster, we proceeded and completed the remaing distance of about another 40 miles (not at the same velocity I hasten to add) in what was starting to become a bit of a hot day!

We finished the event in about 5 hours 45 riding time which gave us an average of 20mph for the whole ride so were very pleased with that.

Back at the finish we caught up with Mr Martin, who was still looking very “ruddy” faced — and as the say in Cyclist Touring Club circles we all parted company to make the journey home — “Tired but happy”

Oh and Mr Adam reference your comment — I was actually very pleased I was on the “wrong” bike — it was a Godsend for the distance we ended up doing — I am now wondering how the devil those guys did 200km in the L’Eroica on Guvnors — something I may aspire to next year!

Gentlemen you have my firm assurances that my next public outing will be on the Guvnor with appropriate clothing and equipment — My Yakkay helmet arrived this morning — just trying to get hold of a Brooks L’Eroica jersey and some suitable shorts — after seeing Mr Martin’s and MG Cycle Chap’s attire yesterday I now have the bit between my teeth!

Roll on Stratford weekend — look forward to seeing you all again then!

Mr Wertie, I certainly agree with reference to the bad signage on yesterdays event. My first ‘wrong’ turn took me towards the A10 heading for London (I doubled back before actually joining it!), and my second happened about 10 miles before the finish line… where the signs appeared to run out completely. Following my nose, I headed for Peterborough and the College Campus… which took me onto a bypass on the outskirts of the city. Needless to say, I didn’t happen upon any other cyclists on that rather busy stretch. Ah well!

In reply to your purchase of a Brooks L’Eroica jersey: I’ve just checked the Bicycle Workshop site, based in Notting Hill. They had size medium in stock until recently (I do recall a club member mentioning the same a couple of months back), but now only have them in small. Perhaps you may want to give them a call to check on the actual measurements? Here’s the web address:

http://www.bicycleworkshop.co.…..b6s140p175

Failing that, another option would be Ben’s Cycle based in Milwaukee (this is where I purchased mine from). Looking on their site I noticed they’ve sold out of the medium, which we both thought would be a good fit for you. They have a large in stock, but retails at $199.99… crikey. Here’s the web address should you wish to make further enquiries:

http://www.benscycle.net/index.….3ae4ca35f4

Perhaps saving a search on eBay could be a good idea, at least you would be notified by e-mail whenever one is listed.

Best of luck, dear fellow!

Kind regards,

Martin

Wertie Sir.… you mentioned I think you were also looking for some wool cycle shorts,… I noticed these being advertised in “Cycling Active” (which actually also has a good article on the Guvnor)

As for my ride chaps… very happy I didnt get lost, though I know what you mean about the lack of arrows 10miles from the end, was very lucky to have had just caught up a local racing filly who navigated us through the little town and back onto the arrows. So I managed 4hrs 34mins and 4 seconds, my ride speed being far short of the “flying Boosters” at 17.3mph… but I was happy and we gained a “silver” standard for the Club

… oh and Wertie Sir… you might like a little read of this on velocult… Wink

Mr MG Cycle Chap

I had to look twice then when you mentioned velocult — thought it might have been something to do with the fact that the Boosters achieved a higher average mph yesterday! No hard feelings old chap — but then we were not really playing on a level playing field as it were — we were cheating a bit on the “plastic” bikes.

Anyway back to the subject of velocult — just had a look at the link — what a fascinating story that I had never heard before — this could be the start of a cult (LOL) following — I will be suggesting to the re-instated Lady Booster that we purchase and slowly imbibe a bottle of bubbly this weekend so I may mount my cork in the appropriate place prior to my Sunday morning jaunt with Mr Adam.

In fact I will only have one glass and then turn in — don’t want to be under the affluence of incohol when I meet up with Mr Adam. As for the bottle I will allow Lady Booster to do whatever she sees fit with it.….…after drinking the contents of course!!

So Sir, look out for the cork when we next meet up

Gentlemen,

First I must congratulate Mr MGcC on winning a silver– bravo, good fellow! I’m having a word with the local carpenter in the morning about the construction of a GOC Trophy cabinet. Well done, Sir. I couldn’t even manage a bronze with a time of 6:06:41… thoughts of ‘stop rattling on to other participants’ and ‘must try harder’ ring through my mind in readiness for the next event. And perhaps a stricter training regime prior!

Fascinating article on the cork, it all becomes clear after seeing Mr Cycling Photographer’s image elsewhere in the forum with similar positioning. I do like a spot of history.

Mr Wertie, enjoy your jolly with Mr Adam come Sunday– and make sure it is just the one glass the night before!

Kind regards,

Martin

Chaps,

I’ve just been leafing through my freebie ‘Cycling Active’ magazine that I picked up at the end of the Fens ride, and happened upon a rather good bike test article contained therein, concerning ‘British Singlespeeds’.

The Cooper Spa is pitted against the Pashley Guvnor, sadly the Guv loses out by 1%. Their ‘wow factor’ points I thought particularly misguided: the Spa received 19/20 while the Guv was awarded an unjust 18/20. Apart from that, I thought it rather a pleasant read!

http://cyclingweekly.ipcshop.c.….=/cms/home

…and the last sentence on summing up the Guvnor reads: “It’s not just a bike you see: it’s a way of life. Ideally it would come with a catalogue for Harris Tweed’. Quite right.

Kind regards,

Martin
