Gentlemen,

May I be so bold as to start a thread to include any and every sportive event we might consider taking part in this year? The Giro d’Stokio n’ Trentino is already on the cards with a number of members signed up, as is the New Forest Rattler.

My mind keeps turning to the Wiggle ‘Flat Out In The Fens’, coming up on Sunday June 26th. Mr Booster, I know you mentioned this a while back and I have PM’d you my interest in this event. I’m certainly willing to have a bash.

77 miles. Start and finish at Peterborough Regional College, Park Crescent Campus, Peterborough PE1 4DZ. As of this evening, just 15 days left to register– £24 entry fee. What say ye?

ohh thats tempting Mr Martin Sir very tempting.… ! …My only concern I’m doing the Wiggle Magnificat (Intercat) on the 12th of June (not on the Gov mind), so might be a bit beaten up to be doing another event so soon… …however, never one to be that sensible, do you know how difficult the Fens route profile is, I cant see any figures for it, just a little wiggly map ? MGcC

Mr MGcC, glad to hear of your interest! Now then, from what I can make of the profile:

http://www.kilotogo.com/media/.….8b495e.jpg

it doesn’t appear too taxing (he says) as regards climbs… I suspect it’s more of an endurance test with it being rather flat in that part of the world. Although I could be completely wrong in my somewhat vague assumptions, as I’m not very sensible either.

Kind regards,

Martin

Oh dear, it will be ‘white feathers’ soon, I am in the erh how you say La Niche.

Do you know what? No? Well I’ll tell you! My laptop has turned against the Guvnor site. Its clearly a manifestation of the ‘hidden’ tech war going on in the background to our lives.…. the machines are hunting down ‘old tech and marginalising it. I will soon be fighting back wearing a collection of ‘Steampunk’ gearSmile

Seriously, a couple of weeks ago my laptop stopped being able to post what I write and only submits ‘quote and reply’. Perhaps I have spilt too much Gin on the keyboard? I can only post on the Guv from this here desk top.

And now my ‘thunder’ has been stolen Yell.…… I wanted to post http://www.kilotogo.com/media/.….8b495e.jpg and then comment about how the word flat clearly means something else in the Fens!

What? Flat as in cap? Thats not flat, it certainly isnt “…The Forclaz, Aravis, Colombiere, Telegraph and Galibier…” but it aint flatWink

On a high note I climbed my own Bete Noire maintaining 2nd gear last week (and in the saddle), I wont even discuss feet gained or over what distance but it was my own ‘Colombiere’Smile

I’ve just realised what it appears ‘I’ have just said. Can I just make clear here and now Biscuit never said ‘that’ and I dont even know what a bally Wiggle Magnificat (Intercat) is.

However, it is entirely possible that I too am not one to be sensible.

… ok Biscuit, I’ve called off my “legal hounds of hell” this time !

… I’m still tempted though… I’ve only ever been to Peterborough twice, both times to get a passport, and I have to admit, I dont remember it being very flat on the way there, but then again I think the route seems to head off towards the fens.… still tempted

I shall keep that one in mind, Mr MGcC… I have to keep that weekend clear at this moment in time.

However, I am pleased to report that I have taken leave of my senses and signed up for the Wiggle ‘Flat Out In The Fens’. It’ll be a breeze, I’m sure…

Bearing in mind that some of you chaps appear to ride other cycles in sportives and audax, what average speed are you expecting on the Guv’ for example during the ‘Fens and the rattler ride?

Reason; I dont ride in groups very often (read negligible) and currently have no idea what ‘av’ means to me on the Guv’ let alone a pelotonLaugh.

I am going to do some comparison rides to get a rough understanding of what I am capable of on the Guv’ (my only road bike that I would consider riding swiftly on [certainly wouldnt consider swiftness as part of the equation on the Humber]).

I accept speed and the pursuit of speed is a thing accursed or damned if just for its own sake, but a 79 mi ride at 20 mph will take 3.95 hrs lets call it between 4–6 hrs to allow for refilling the hip flask Wink at a more ‘doable’ 15mph you are looking at 5.2ish.….….…… does any one expect to get home before tea?

Think I may have to change the Carradice Barley for a tool roll and either get the wife to take the plus fours in a tad or switch to the sportpack option (Breeks).

Crumbs!! Biscuit,  an average of 20mph over 77 miles on a Guv’nor may mean you’ll have to be tested for banned substances.  Stick to jelly-babies and hope for an average of 15.

Chapeau! Martin.  I won’t be able to join you in the flatlands but I’m sure you’ll do us proud.

dt.

p.s. I was also having trouble posting but on the desk-top, not the lap-top. It turned out to be something to do with the recently installed IE9.

Crikey, Mr Biscuit! If you are planning on doing 20mph in the Fens then I’ll stay in your tail wind if you don’t mind, and you can draw me along! Seriously, though… here’s my situation:

I’m new to cycling, having bought my 3 speed Guv back in February, and previous to that I had barely turned a pedal since I was 12 years old (I’m now at the grand age of 41). It’s the only bicycle I own, and I commute to work on it (in fine weather) making that a 15 mile round trip each day. I’ve never owned one of these light weight bicycles (not that there is anything wrong with them, they just don’t appeal to me), so tackling treacherous hills and steep inclines in first gear on the Guvnor is all I’ve ever known.

Over the past few months I have noticed my fitness level increasing, but I’m certainly no athlete. Like your good self, I’m not in a cycling club and whenever I am out on a jaunt it’s nearly always just me and the bicycle. Indeed, I have just returned from a 20 miler which included three very long and drawn out steep inclines… tough going but taken at a steady pace, I found it was all do-able in 1hour 30 minutes. I’m under no illusions about keeping up that kind of pace over a 5 to 6 hour period in the Fens, though! We’ll see.

What I have discovered after joining Mr Terry for a 30 mile bicycle ride yesterday was that covering such mileage with a fellow rider really is a breeze, and I think Mr Terry would agree that we could have quite easily done another 30 if time and commitments would have allowed. Chatting as you go, tackling the hills together, before you know it– the mileage is in the bag.

Perhaps it’s my inexperience that leads me to believe that what I’ve signed up for is no impossible task, but I’m looking forward to giving it a go. My intention is to complete, rather than compete. And with that in mind, I hope that makes you feel that a 77 mile circuit (for that is what it is, Sir– not 79! Those extra 2 miles could break a mans spirit.) is achievable on the Guv.

And I do intend to be home in time for tea!

Mr Terry, ’tis a shame you cannot join me on this one, but your well wishes are gratefully received. I shall do my best for the GOC!

Kind regards,

Martin

I say chaps I think I may have misled! No performance enhancing jelly babies, more a bag of acid drops, cola cubes, pear drops and so on attached to the handlebar. I should have clearly said the 20 mph was more of a device to illustrate the point (Its a day ride, not a race).

The nuance of my post needs explaining further. Where I wrote “…at a more doable 15mph … 5.2ish…” I included all measures of speed from zero to that exalted aspiration. I see me being closer to zero than 20 mph unless there is a downhill in the vicinity.

I averaged 10mph on a Ice Qnt round the IOW (68mi) so, sort of know what that feels like. I think the trike weighs more than the Guv’ but the recumbency of it sort of balances things out

Equally 5.2 hrs is an aspiration that will get me round — I too aim to complete 79mi not race them (I am referring to The Rattler). If I feel so inclined I might just take another spin around the block to chalk up to 79 if The Rattler is indeed 77 and if honour needs servingSmile

On the plus side 77 mi at av 10mph is nearly 8 hours — so the benefit of that is more time in the company of fellow Guv’noristasSmile

I was merely trying to get a measure, a benchmark so to speak where one is sorely lacking a bench — indeed I may just make my own (benchmark not bench).

Martin I empathise re the riding solo more often. However that has its good points going wither and yon at ones own behest. Can I wish you well in The Fens, I would love to be there but it isnt looking too good for me re timing. You can if you so wish in your darkest hour imagine ‘drafting’ me at 20 mphLaugh to get you through.

Mr Terry — I will check if IE9 is the dashed culprit, thanks for that.

Martin Sir.… I couldnt see you suffer (errr I mean ride) alone, so I’ve entered as well. Out of interest as there are now two of us, we appear to be officially Team “Guvnor Owners’ Club” according to Kilo~To~Go !

MGcC (aka Stuart)

(ps… it better be flat, or you’re going to have a whinging brummie complaining for 77miles !)

Mr Biscuit, apologies dear fellow– we appear to have crossed our wires regarding mileage of the Fens and Rattler rides! A real shame that the date hasn’t worked out for you on the Fens jaunt, but thank you for your offer of ‘drafting’, I suspect I may need it.

Mr Stuart, Team GOC… it has a certain ring to it, does it not? Splendid! I will raise a glass of Black Sheep’s finest to you this very evening, good Sir. We shall suffer together on the 26th of June… and it will be flat. I just know it (Fingers desperately crossed).

Kind regards,

Martin
