I have now decided to take the plunge and buy a Guvnor and have  2 questions which I hope the forum can help me with:-

After much deliberation and reading the various debates on the forum about single speed Vs 3 speed I have decided on a Guvnor 2 speed with coaster brake. However, searching the internet I don’t see any adverised — plenty of single speed and 3 speeds but no 2 speeds. Is it just a matter of popping down to my local Pashley friendly bike shop and getting them to order one for me ?

Rather than buying over then internet, I’d prefer to use a local bike shop. I live in Wetherby (Leeds/Harrogate area) and wondered if anyone could recommend a local bike shop that could benefit from my custom.

Hope someone can help.

Rgds

Ian C,

Welcome, I can confirm the Guv’nor Plus Two is available, UK delivery currently about 4 weeks. There’s nothing on Pashley’s website and no brochure yet, but come on we are talking Pashley here, what do you expect!

With regard to a local dealer we have several members in your area who I’m sure would be pleased to advise you.

Safe rides ‘One & All’,

Good evening Gentlemen,

Mr Ian, may I take this opportunity to also welcome you to this forum and to congratulate your good self on an inspired future purchase.

I myself bought my Guvnor from Evans Cycles (three speed… just so you know… I am not ashamed. I know other members feel it’s not in the spirit of the Path Racer, but by golly was I glad of those extra gears on a recent GOC jaunt through Calderdale). Now, having had a conversation with other members over a pint after said jaunt, it was the general consensus that Evans was to be awarded a ‘thumbs down’. While I wouldn’t use them to service my Guv, my dealings with them upon my purchase gave no cause for complaint.

In my local Evans store they happened to have a Guvnor in stock… quite lucky as I know other owners have had to wait a number of weeks. So with a quick test ride (I knew I was going to buy it anyway, I was instantly smitten after seeing quite a few of them on last years Tweed Run) and my purchase made I was riding off into the sunset. As Mr Wheeler states, you will have to wait a number of weeks before your Plus Two is ready, however. But the wait will be worth it, Sir. No doubt about it.

Here’s some links to your nearest Evans stores should you wish to make enquiries:

I do hope you have found this useful, and perhaps other local members might be able to offer better advice with news of independent cycle stores worthy of your patronage. Best wishes to you anyhow, good fellow. It would be a pleasure to make your acquaintance on one of our Northern Guvnor Jaunts in the not too distant future on your new steed.

Do let us know how you get on.

Kind regards,

Martin

Ian C Sir… I would agree with MrMartin. I purchased my Guv 3 speed from Evans in nottingham… good friendly service from the shop, and they had the bicycle within a few days from ordering ! (I assume they keep a few at a central stocking point).

I would suggest you give them a ring… whether you have it serviced there is another story altogether. One shop I’ve had really good service at (and is the place I get my best race bike serviced at) is Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative (they have a shop in both Leeds and Sheffield) good chaps. on my last service the actual mechanic doing the service called me to discuss at some considerable length (and their expense as they were calling to my mobile) the pros and cons of which chain rear sproket combination I wanted them to use etc.… actually i think they sell Pashley as well from memory.

Mr MGcC, Sir– what the Dickens are you doing up at this hour? On a Saturday?

Mr Ian, I will most certainly agree with the above regarding the Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative– I too have experienced top notch customer service at this fine emporium. I bought my Quoc Pham cycling shoes from them online, although I found them too small upon trying them on after taking delivery the day after ordering, but after a quick e-mail they sourced another pair for me to exchange over at their Leeds store by the next day. Great communication and smashing advice, superb. And it’s situated just behind Majestic Wines in Chapel Allerton… so you could cobble together a nice case of vino while you’re there… just a thought.

Well, the deed is done !

3 speed Guv’nor ordered from Cycle Sense in Tadcaster — delivery due in 4 weeks !

Thanks for all the advice. I did consider Evans and Edinburgh cycles however, the 8 mile cycle back from Tadcaster on country roads verses picking the bike up in the car from either Evans or EC pipped it for me.
