Hi… probably a question for the Guv’nor technical elite!

I own a 3 speed guvnor in London. I find I’m mostly in second gear but it’s  a little too low for most occasions — and gear three is too high unless I have a downhill section.

I was thinking about trading in for a single speed version (I have an opportunity to more-or-less do a straight swap.) However, I was wondering how the gearing compares to my 3 speed? Does the single speed gear equal my second gear, or is it set slightly higher as a good all rounder?

Also, is the single speed any lighter? If so, any ideas how much?

Thanks!

Hello Westerniser.….….……according to the Owner’s Manual, gearing spec. is:  Single Speed Gear: 65″. Three Speed Gear: 44″, 59″, 78″. So the single speed is between 2nd. and 3rd.….….……safe rides one and all, Geoff.

PS: The weight of the SA hubs are: X-RD, 835g & X-RD3, 1400g.

Evening Mr. Westerniser,

Have you considered changing the size of your rear sprocke to adjust the ratiost? These only cost about £3.00 plus about £5.00 for a sprocket tool to undo the lock-nut.

Riders opinions differ between the single and the three speed, the main difference, although both are fine bikes is the single-speed version is the correct one.

Regards,

Adam

Hello Folks,

Speaking of changing the sprocket, this is exactly what I did on friday .… my 3 speed now runs a 14 tooth instead of 20 which is a dramatic difference (I ordered a 16 but this lil thing turned up first & I just had to dabbble & as rightly said they can be had for as little as £2.85) … another point is we found nothing more than a small screwdriver is needed to change it as it’s held in place with a circlip.

But thanks to the sprocket it goes like a rocket, however it is a bit of a legbuster .… I would suggest an 18 if you don’t want too much of an increase .… the chainline looks much nicer too.

Brilliant, so the single speed so quite a bit lighter, as well as having a perfect sounding gear between the 2 and 3 on my 3 speed. I looked for ages online for this info, the forum has delivered!

One and all.….….……also worth checking out is the CTC website with regard to gearing etc.. See my web link in Forum > ‘Are you happy with 3 gears’, dated 6:55pm August 4. Explains gear inches, which I guess many cyclists misunderstand, including myself until I read it!.….….……safe rides, Geoff.
