Assuming most of us wear clothing of some type whilst waffting around the country on our fine Gunvors,
are there any fellow veloistes that use merino wool jerseys etc?
I have done for some time now and can’t recommend it highly enough. Prices for certain items can be alarming,
Rapha being the best. Shutt and Woolistic are two other good makes and slightly cheaper.
In fact, having taken part in the recent London Tweed Run I was amazed at how cool and comfortable I was in
not only my merino jersey, but my tweed jacket and moleskin breeks.…… moral of this story? Don’t get taken
in with the marketing hype on new sci fi materials! Lycra, (sorry for the fowl language on this hallowed site), is
OK but reaches it’s ‘odour’ and comfort limits very quickly compared to nature’s best.
Besides, you are bound to get decent service from your landlord at your local public house in wool rather than
looking like a prostrate sausage in.…… lycra.
Ride on!

One and all.….….Brooks produce L’Eroica merino cycling jersey in the classic style, price £80 SRP UK. It’s also worth checking out the Rapha range, they do have some accoutrements suitable for the Guv’nor wheeler: long socks, caps, silk neckerchiefs, gloves etc., pricey but nice. For cycling shoes check out: Quoc Pham, Dromarti and Timberland (style #70548, Palladian).….……safe riding, Geoff.

Chatting to the chap in Walker Slater London a while back and they are producing some plus twos for cycling — £99. I’ll be investing at some point.

Good Evening,

A long time fan of the merino wool top I think a few of you may be interested in these that I have recently found

http://www.probikekit.com/disp.….code=C1546

I know they are not 100% merino but for £25.20 we may as well spend our money while it’s worth something.

Regards,

Adam

Fully agreed on the merino, and don’t forget to look to the high st (Muji, M&S, COS) for occasional merino items of suitability.

Looking forward to the Walker Slater plus twos, as long as they resist the urge to include saddle-area cushioning, which to me is always unsightly and never necessary.

And thanks Adam, in providing those (useful) links, you’ve reminded me to impose a lifetime ban on any members caught wearing one of these:

Adam, I look forward to you modelling said outfit. I can confirm I will be as far away from you as possible, probably somewhere tropical!

Geoff, will add Farlows to the Fine Outfitting section, as they are indeed fine outfitters.

Here’s a little story for you. I went in there the day before the Tweed Run looking for shooting socks. I half-expected derision: for my out-of-season request, my general appearance, my limited budget and my cycling intentions.

Instead I got wonderful service from a bygone day.

Enthusiastic encouragement, sympathy for my budget, junior staff sent on errands to investigate the storeroom, to check catalogues and make calls who knows where, imaginative alternatives delicately suggested (ladies shooting socks), and above all else a wholehearted agreement that the colour and style had to be right, and had to pair well with my existing plus twos.

No socks could be found to match these requirements, so no socks were sold to me. Instead a phone call to a rival store, a map drawn to its whereabouts and I trotted off to a successful purchase elsewhere (with equally good service).

I was left feeling like I ought to telephone them and let them know I had got home okay with the socks safely in hand. It was brilliant.

Hello Folks,

With regards to the above mentioned quality of service I too have recently been scouting my local gunsmiths & such places, and with a similar kind of selfless service .… the logical reason for this is that simply being out & seen in such gentlemanly attire is promotion enough for all the buisinesses that supply traditional english clothing.

Here is a bargain for you chaps … I bought a pair of these breeks of extremely good quality & at £16.99 I was amazed. — http://www.sportsmanguncentre.…..in+Breeks/

Has anyone approached Pashley about a woollen Guv’nor jersey, or maybe just a “Pashley” script top, in a style similar to the Brooks L’eroica?

One and all.….…. looking out of the window and seeing the ‘cornish mizzle’, prompted me to pen this email… do you pen an email?… and to quote from a section in our fellow thinkers website:  http://www.tweed.cc/style.html  , “If the barometer forecasts rain, the cyclist is wise to remain in bed or, failing that, repair to a hostelry for refreshment”. Well go on then, it is after the noon hour, just. Cheers!.….…safe riding, Geoff.

Ah, Cornish Mizzle, I remember it well when I resided in St.Agnes. Not keen on

some of the beers though.…. St.Austell ales leave a lot to be desired. Skinners

of Truro or Spingo from the Blue Anchor, Helston. Fine brews indeed! Just the

ticket when one is “chackin’”.

Cheers Pard!

Good morning one and all,

Are bags classed as clothing? Anyway, to follow on from Comment posted by Adam regarding the Brooks ‘Barbican’ bag, I’ve seen and tried the smaller version of this bag and I thought it a rather clumsy fit/feel. I also wasn’t very keen on the magnetic flap closure and the awkward strap arrangement. Probably more suited for its intended courier use than a general use cycling bag.

I’ve been using a Rapha ‘Bonk Bag’ for a while now and can recommend. It’s well made with angled strap which keeps the bag sitting unobtrusively in the small of the back and isn’t a silly price, £25 compared to £200+ for the Brooks offerings!

If you are in the market for a good quality, fit for purpose bag at a sensible price, check out the website:   http://www.rapha.cc/bonk-bag-1

Safe rides, Geoff.

Gents,

Popped into Walker Slater at lunchtime and had a chat about the Plus Twos. They’ll happily alter any pair of trousers in the shop into a pair of twos, fours or whatever you fancy. Only small drawback is that the tightening strap will be a piece of velcro, rather than strap and buckle.

When I mentioned to Michael that they would be for cycling, he measured the waist to fit best for leaning over the bike, but to hang properly whilst standing up — avoiding the builders grin.

Price weighs in around the £120 mark, depending on the type of material you want. Theres some nice Harlequin socks in stock too (not knee length, sadly).

Edinburgh store also happy to do the same.
