What people thoughts on capes? I’ve been meaning to invest in one for a while, due to London weather doing it’s thing.

I see that our leader uses a carradice — James, thoughts on this? How small does it roll up and pack away?

Brooks appear to be getting close to releasing the new rain cape, and it looks like just the job — 250 smackers, mind!

Still, anyone else brandishing the cape out there? Recommendations?

One and all, and Fenrir in particular.….….….capes aren’t for me, but I see Bobbin Bicycles are now stocking a waxed cotton cape, in the Barbour jacket style, priced at £55. Available in medium and large sizes, comes with callico pouch and reflective strip along the back. The Brooks cape, if and when it appears, will probably be made in China like most of their non saddle products, and at £250 is, in my view, is just completely priced over the top.….……safe riding, Geoff.

Fenrir, Carradice do two very good garments. I know a gentleman that uses one
when ever the weather warrants it’s use and swears by it.
I tend to agree with our Western based colleague, the yet to be released Brooks
will be very costly and made at the end of The Silk Road.….
Check out Carradice in Lancashire.
Ride on!

Just to reiterate, the Duxback by Carradice is one of the best pieces of cloth I own. I have a post dedicated to its charms which I will keep for a September publish.

Suffice to say, you know those very rare garments you come across that:

a) are a pleasure to own and wear

b) exceed at their stated function

c) should cost twice as much as they do

d) feel like a long term investment

For me it is all of those.

PS It packs up to about A5 dimensions, 2.5 inches thick. Folding is an art form, but quickly learned.

We popped up to Bobbin a while back and checked out the capes — carradice for me, as it did seem the best about. The Brooks one must be made of saffron to justify that price.

Glad to hear that my choice is a good one though.

One and all,

Here’s a link showing the new Brooks, now known as ‘John Boultbee’ Oxford Rain Cape:   http://www.road.cc/content/ima.….ain-cape-1

Safe rides, Geoff.

I did actually get to try one on, and compare it with the Carradice side by side, when in Bobbin a few weeks ago.

Brooks is nicely made, lighter and has some nice touches. No way is it worth the £200 asking price though, around £75–80 and they’d have had a sale on the spot.
