Sirs, for many years, on and off and dependent on finances, I have enjoyed the odd

Cuban cigar. Bolivar, Monte Christo, Cohiba (Fidel’s favourite), to name a few. With a

fine single malt or vintage brandy, it’s one of life’s treasured luxuries.

The cost of this little bit of heaven is quite high so as I mature in years I have

thought of buying a pipe. This opens a whole new world as to styles, materials and

makers. My dear departed father used to smoke a fine Irish make, Peterson, from Dublin.

I recently ventured into one of the very few remaining smoking emporiums in Cheltenham

to view this beautiful range of items. With so many to choose from I noticed a special edition

range named after famous literary giants: Keats, Yeats, Shaw, and Joyce. Although not highly

educated myself, I allude to higher realms from time to time. My enthusiasm was dulled somewhat

when the shop owner said, with a glint in his eye, “… and there is the Wilde version”.

I could not help but start to perspire and indeed, tremble at the very thought of owning such an

item.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m as broad minded as many of us are, but the thought of having Oscar Wilde’s

pipe” in my mouth has got me thinking that I will keep puffing my Tom Thumbs!

To be honest I’ve always thought “The Cycling Photographer” was a bit of lengthy nickname, maybe … errrrmmmm.….. “Bosie”  !!! would be more suitable ?

Sir… I’m more of a “pedaler” than a fighter, so please accept my humble apology, and I promise not to call you Bosie…

Mr Cycling Photographer

May I suggest you look into the possibility of acquiring a Calabash pipe?

These really are different and would most certainly elevate you to “Chap” status!

If you turn up on Thursday I may show you mine!

Pip Pip!

Mr. Booster, thank you for your offer to show me your pipe. Alas I am otherwise

engaged this Thursday. Calabash are indeed a fine part of the smokers world.

One must admire the curves on some of these things!

In the light of Mr. British Leyland’s, sorry, MGCycle Chap’s connotations I might

end up buying a Bulldog style pipe. No fear of aspersions there!

Have been advised by those helpful chaps at Alfred Dunhill that a wind proof version

of a pipe, Tyrolean stylee, might be the way to go if riding the Guv’. Only trouble is

one is often keen to do things properly regarding outfit.

Over to you MGC, views on Lederhosen.….…..

I may well discuss the choice with my beloved as she is experienced on bent or straight.

Ride on!

Evening Gentlemen,

Mrs Adam and I recently went to see Casablanca at the moving picture house, the first film of the night was a Laurel and Hardy short where they both end up in a bar.

The barman comes over to take the order:

Oliver: I’ll have two beers please

Stan: (Looks at Oliver) I’ll have two beers as well

So much better if I could have found the clip.

Regards,

Adam

Dear Mr. Photographer, Gentlemen,

Having smoked a pipe for many years I can recommend ‘baccy from John Hollingsworth and Sons, Cigar Merchants and Tobacconists since 1843. I tend to buy it from Lands in Stratford but I think in your part of the world Mr. CP, that the same range is stocked by Tobacco World of Cheltenham. I’d recommend the Liquorice Sambucca which goes equally well with an after dinner glass of Pedro Ximenez’s finest or a post ride pint of Marble Lagonda IPA or similar.

Sadly, I don’t know where one can acquire a quality rough shag!

Cheers!

Dear Mr. Morse, thank you. I do indeed frequent Tobacco World! A dying breed. Unfortunatley it is

nestled in one of those awful ‘shopping malls’ with chavs loitering. Same company.

The Sambucca sounds wonderful, although reminds me of a very embarrassing event at a restaurant in

London some years ago: I was squeezed into a corner seat on a table of nine, due to a very busy night.

Flaming Sambucca was served with coffee after a very fine meal. One needed to visit the gentlemen’s room

with the only way out being over the table. Yes, flames took advantage of the liqour being knocked over by

yours truly!

I am a presently on Ashton’s Artisan Blend with Latakia, Perique and Virginia tobaccos. Heady. I do have an

eye of one of Peterson’s Royal Irish Rosslare pipes: amber stem and light honey briar.…… many pennies!

As for the shag, if you PM me I can advise on a Madam in Belgravia.…..

Puff away!

It would be a dreadful shame to ruffle the serene state, which a good pipe can induce, by reviving unwanted memories of yesteryear. Unless of course the memories are sufficiently bygone to induce little more than a wry smile. Perhaps a more gentle Buttered Rum would work better than the excitable Liquorice Sambucca.

My word those Peterson’s pipes are lovely and yet again another desire has been created. As I tend to dip in and out of pipe smoking, I don’t think I could do the either the pipe, or the investment, justice and besides I’d be dreadfully worried about dropping the beauty whilst riding the Guvnor. The pipe that is rather than any ladies from Belgravia.

Cheers!

As a non smoker, should I perhaps purchase a Liquorice pipe to complement the Guv’nor? Would that have the same effect?

What, everything? The night I came home from Pongo Twistleton’s birthday party and mistook the standing lamp for a burglar?
