I was lucky enough to see this bike on the Tweed Run, unfortunately I didn’t get much of an opportunity to talk to the rider before we were ushered on our way for the start of the ride.
I believe the hub as a re-release of a SA three speed fixed hub, if you look carefully you can see a small black lever protruding from the end of the right handlebar.
At the time I thought it might make a suitable replacement for my daily commuter, but since then have heard prices of around £1000 mentioned, this could of course be a figure plucked from the ether, as I can’t remember the source.
Thanks for the update Geoff. Last I heard from Pashley it was going to be May this year, so end of the year isn’t too bad.
I do hope the ‘Country Clubman’ still makes it, my commute is 15 mi each way and you haven’t experienced rain since you’ve been in a tropical thunderstorm so the mudguards are a must!
I must admit I am a bit nervous about using a bike with just 3 gears ( I am 61 years of age) and may investigate the feasibility of buying a wheel with a SA 8 gear hub fitted. I will let you know how I get on. I think buying a Guvnor and converting it to Derailleur is a bit infa dig.
I spoke to Pashley today and yes the Clubman is coming out later in the year. It looks like they will be doing a 5 speed SA hub as well as a Derailleur 16 speed version.
I must admit this does sound a better bet than the Guvnor and to be honest, I prefer the cream colour scheme as well.
I think I will sit back and wait and go for the 5 speed hub.
Just a quick point, the cream colour is the three speed, the five speed ‘Country Clubman’ comes in a lovely deep burgundy. You can just see the bike behind the cream one.
An update from Pashley in reply to an enquiry re future Gov’nor developments. The response was pretty firm that Pashley are not planning any future developments for the Gov’nor as they are focussing their efforts on the launch of the Clubman range later this year. ( yes confirmed as launch in 2010)
I get the feeling this may spell doom for the accessories range .
I am now convinced that Pashleys are looking to the Clubman for the particular market that we are in and this may be at the expense of the Guvnor.
The Guvnor is an excellent bicycle but there is a definate need for extra gearing, stands and mudguards and the Clubman will fulfil this role. I suspect the Guvnor will be left as a 3 speed bicycle without mudguards and kept to the basics. This will please some and irritate others.
I am waiting for the Clubman and will take it from there.
Spot on . I specificaly asked if there were any plans for aditional four speed variants or given the stated model range of the Clubman anything in the five speed area. A definite NO from Pashley.
We willl have to remain purists.
On the “glass half full” view the Clubman uses the same frame so if they are investing in an accessories range , based on the 30’s principles they may suit the Gov’nor.
More an observation than a question, are you sure it’s the same frame? Looking at the above pictures the seat stays appear to be directly connected to the top/seat tube. On our Guvnors as you know the seat stays are connected to the frame via a bolt.
It is also interesting that Pashley are not planning on a range of accessories for the Guvnor, at this year’s Tweed Run I was talking to a Designer recently employed by Pashley to develop an accessories range.
