Good morning Gentlemen,

Quite a find, Mr MGcC, excellent webular sleuthing skills. The designers’ line of thought is something to be applauded, but I wholeheartedly agree with you on the fact that the clock face is in need of a little tweaking. Something akin to a traditional Westminster, perhaps..?

Kind regards,

Martin

Beautiful product design.  As a designer myself I think they have done an excellent job.  I have a Specialized Speed Zone computer on one of my bikes because I liked the round design.

MGCycleChap, thanks for the welcome!  I’m looking forward to learning more about the Guv’nor from the forum.  May I assume that the “MG” part of your name refers to a certain car previously manufactured in Abingdon?  We may have more than the Guv’nor in common…

Indeed John Sir.… but unfortunatly not a beautiful Abingdon 47 TC as yourself though, but unfortunatly a considerably more modern TF from Longbridge. However I suppose its claim to fame is it was the last of the line, the last proper british built MG sportscar.…. Frown

Actually ( and bizarely) they never sold the new TFs in the US (why I will never understand)… so I’ve attached a little pic of mine, (the better half drives it still everyday to her office) Smile

The modern TF is a fine sports car and America came close to having it on our shores.  Unfortunately, it never quite made it.  Yours is beautiful in the metallic gray with the red calipers and MG club badge.  I don’t mean to highjack this thread, but here is a photo of my MG:

I think the Guv’nor will look just right beside it in the garage.

Nice automobiles indeed, Gentlemen!

Nowadays pretty much all new cars come equipped with some sort of a GPS navigating system to the extent people use the navigators for monitoring their speed etc., which brings me to my point: what’s the need for a speedometer as almost all of the modern mobile phones have a built in GPS capabilities? I recently discovered this wonderful piece of software, Sports Tracker (http://www.sports-tracker.com/), which you can install on pretty much all smartphones, even some older Nokias. It tracks your route, shows your speed, pace and such information and even puts you on map. After the ride it asks you whether you want to upload the ride into the webservice, in which you can see the route on a map together with curves for speed and elevation during the ride. My astonishment was great when I once stopped to take photos during my ride with my mobile phone and after the ride the software asked me whether I wanted the photos to be uploaded into the service as well! I replied yes, and now the photos can be seen on the map right where I took them. And you can even connect the phone to a heart rate monitor via bluetooth, if you’re really into training. Ok, I just realized I’m starting to sound like a commercial, but I really do recommend the software for those with suitable phones, as the service is (at least on my Nokia) completely free (of course you need to have a fixed rate data plan).

Miikka

syksy, that is such a cool idea!  I use my iPhone for everything, and I’m surprised that I didn’t think about this application as a bike speedometer.  I even made a custom bracket to mount my iPhone next to the tach in my MINI.  It’s connected to the stereo, so I use it both as the primary music source and GPS when needed.   I wonder if there is a handlebar mount for the iPhone?

Mr. TexasGuv, there sure is! You can order one from for example Dealextreme in Hong Kong for only about 5 dollars. I don’t know how they manage to keep their business profitable, but there are no separate shipping fees. On the other side the build quality can be pretty bad and it won’t look too Guv’norish, but it’s cheap.. Here’s a link to one example: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/u.….gs-4–51185

Miikka
