Gentlemen,

I wonder if I could draw upon the member’s collective knowledge concerning the Brooks L’Eroica cycling jersey. I understand that this much coveted piece of cycling wear is no longer in production, and I see that remaining stocks are depleting fast. I have stumbled across quite a few websites selling the jersey in size small, but I have managed to locate a company in Notting Hill that has a medium in stock, and an enquiry to said emporium wasn’t particularly enlightening. A recent trip to the tailors revealed that I have a 41 inch chest, and this coupled with a middle aged spread (which I think I am beginning to cycle off) got me thinking (and hoping)… could I be shoehorned into a medium?

I see that the purpose of the garment has to be close fitting so that anything stuffed into the back pockets doesn’t swing about too much whilst cycling, but am I being a too optimistic in my current thinking?

If any of you distinguished chaps own one of these fine jerseys and don’t mind revealing your upper body vital statistics and size of garment in this public domain so that I may make a comparison, then any advice you could offer would be very much appreciated before making my intended purchase.

And Mr Wheeler, if you happen to read this, may I take this opportunity to apologise for my initial dumbfounded reaction upon meeting you at the Tweed Run last weekend. I clapped eyes upon your Brooks jersey before your very good self, and intended to ask you all about it… but what with talk of wingnuts and all things Pashley and so little time, it slipped my mind.

Kind regards,

Martin

Dear Mr. Martin, do you happen to know if the garments in question are Italian made? If so

they tend to be a bit clip on their indicated sizing, the same going for their ‘lycra’ stuff.

I have some Nike ‘Tete de Course” , now discontinued, merino wool tops. Re the pockets,

a light load would be advised as the material, as wonderful as it is, tends to result in an Edwardian

wet swimming costume look after being worn should you carry a ‘domestique’ type load.

I feel a medium may be a little to risky. I, of course, may be wrong. Buy it for one of your

nieces.……

Rapha would of course be tops. I would save and go for something from them.

Hope this helps?

Ride on!

Martin,

My Brooks jersey is an XL, I’ve just measured the garment and it’s a 43″ chest . As you say cycling jerseys are designed to be a snug fit, but I think a medium might be a tad too snug for a 41″ chest.

I conferred with Mrs. DW and she also thinks you need to go for at least a large, she also advises the ‘Made in Italy’ knitwear, which this is, tends to be on the snug side for fitting!

I obtained mine through eBay, new unused, probably it was too small for the original purchaser?

Safe rides, DW.

Gentlemen,

I thank you for your rapid response.

Mr C. Photographer, invaluable advice dispensed… you have indeed confirmed what was lurking at the back of my mind already. A medium is going to be far too small for my frame, Italian manufactured or otherwise.  And as much as I love my nieces… they are very welcome to pay £81.69 for a Brooks jersey of their very own. I take it you have a photo shoot in mind (chortle) ?

I have looked at the Rapha merino wool jerseys, and thought one in red would be quite suitable… but my size (be it L or XL) is out of stock. I fear I am suffering from the “I want the one I can’t have” syndrome. The Brooks is my first choice, with it’s black and beige colouring… most suitable cycling gear for the Guv. There is a website based in California selling one in size L, but I’ll be damned if I can find it again. I do recall the price being 127.99… I’m just hoping that that is in US dollars, and not GBP.

Mr Wheeler, thank you for your combined efforts with your good lady regarding appropriate sizing. I shall see if I can track down the US company as mentioned above. I thought I had bookmarked it on my initial search, but it appears not…

I will go back to eBay and initiate another search, and sign up for e-mail notification should another Brooks come up for auction.

Thanks once again, what a marvellous forum this is!

Martin Sir… have you tried Prenda’s website, I purchased myself a nice wool( mix) Santini Italia jersey not long ago, I’m 40–41″ chest but as its Italian cut I always go 3xl (44–46″) … they are on sale for £50 ish … I’m very pleased with mine

Ah, Mr MGcc… thank you for the nod toward Prenda’s site. One I shall certainly be returning to for suitable cycling gear fit for the summer months ahead (the tank tops and Tattersall shirts I have been wearing aboard the Guv are becoming increasingly uncomfortable in the clement weather we have been experiencing of late). But for now, I shall be quite content with the Brooks L’Eroica jersey I have just purchased from the States. Which leads me onto…

Mr Wheeler, a doff of the cap to you good fellow. I can’t thank you enough for rooting out a link to Ben’s Cycle Co. of Milwaukee… you deserve a medal. I have made my purchase in size XL. My decision had nothing to do with the fact that there was a 45% discount in this size compared to the size L priced at $199.99, you understand. And a quick scout about the internet produced a voucher code adding further discount to my purchase. All in all, it’s cost me £85.50 GBP with express international postage. I am one very happy chappy.

Gentleman, thank you all for your good advice. It really is very much appreciated.

Now for a glass of Merlot to celebrate.

Kind regards,

Martin

Mr Wheeler… I fear I may have to remortgage the house to be able to afford the Rapha neckware, too… but I shall keep it in mind for a future purchase!

Martin,

Have you taken delivery of your Brooks L’Eroica jersey?  Size XL?  For a 41″ chest?  How is the fit?  The website in question says it is a 46″ fit!  If nearer 46″ than 41″ I shall have to pounce…

Thanks,

Alex

A very good evening to you Sir!

Yes indeed, I took delivery of my XL L’Eroica jersey the other week and I couldn’t be happier. This American company offered excellent customer service, and I can’t recommend them highly enough. As Mr CP had raised with his question earlier in the post, these Brooks jerseys from Ben’s Cycle Co. are made in Italy, so with that comes the incredibly slender sizing… for that read: XL is perfect for a 41 to 43inch chest.

It’s fairly snug on me and shows off my middle aged spread to a tee. But, I think it would look suitably well on a chap with a chest size up to 44inches. Any size over this I fear would be too uncomfortable for the wearer. I do hope you’ve found this information useful, Mr McF… and that it has helped you make up your mind. Another thing that you need to factor in should you decide to make a purchase from this Stateside company (that I didn’t) was that I had to pay £31 customs duties before it would be delivered to my door. Still, I think it worth it. It is a stunning piece of cycling kit.

Let us know how you get on!

Kind regards,

Martin

And a very good morning to you Martin Sir!

I may give it a go: I daresay the re-sell value will cover most of my investment if the cling is too much for the British public to endure.

By the way, rather bad luck getting clobbered for £31 by HMRC on that purchase.  I think customs duty should not apply to an item at that price, only VAT.  Did they hit you with duty and some sort of default fee or are there fixed fees on top of the VAT?

Kind regards,

Alex

You’re absolutely right, Sir– should you make the purchase and decide it isn’t right I have no doubt you would make your money back. There can’t be many of the them left in the world, rare as hen’s teeth as they say!

From what I can remember from the invoice (to be honest I was too busy opening the package to take a great deal of notice!), the fees were calculated at £12 VAT with a further £19 added for the cost of ‘handling’ by Parcelforce here in the UK. Ouch.

Tis a very fine garment, though. I’ve just got to decide upon a suitable material for Mr Holden the tailor to fashion a pair of Plus Two’s and my sportive outfit will be complete. Those and the Qouc Pham cycling shoes I hope to be ordering come pay day. I think I need to get some overtime in. Sharpish!

Martin

Martin,

You may see this on a separate thread but I placed an order with Walnutstudiolo for a leather ‘cinch’ and some leather for handlebar grips.  Cost in $ was $60 and $27 for shipping.  All I got hit for was £12.75 customs handling by Royal Mail.  I think that the powers that be let most low value stuff through without VAT then whack it onto a small minority of packages such as yours.

Better luck next time.

Aha! Mr McF, very glad to hear you received your package from the United States without other beastly charges on top. I too have been mulling over the same WalnutStudio leather handlebar grips, in fact I was chatting to Mr Terry about it during our cycling jaunt Saturday last… Mr Irobot is indeed an inspiration. Etsy has opened up a whole new world of want and need. Invaluable information on the customs side of things, I think that may just have tipped the scales in favour of a purchase.

On the matter of the Brooks L’Eroica Jersey, I have to admit… the size XL does feel a little ‘roomy’ on my 41 inch chest, more so on my puny shoulders. I do believe it may well be a perfect fit for your good self should you decide to take the plunge. And by golly does it keep you cool on these warm summer cycling outings, the natural fibres whicking away the sweat… it does exactly what it says ‘on the tin’.

Sir, I trust you will post a photographic account of your new leather handlebar assemblage? I do hope so.

Kind regards,

Martin

Dear Martin,

Glad to hear from you!  After posting I was worried that it might seem that I was crowing about my escaping lightly at the hands of Customs & Excise or HMRC or whatever they call themselves these days.  Please be assured that I was not.

Before you leap I think we have to accept that these charges may be incurred at different levels.

On first inspection  the leather looks of very good quality and a superb match for the Guv’s leather grips.  Am pondering where to sew the stuff on the seat, top and down tubes.  Decisions, decisions.  I will endeavour to provide photographs on completion of this exercise.  In my view you can never have too much leather in your life…

Certainly, there are good things to be had from Walnutstudiolo.  I did think that a bulk order to the UK might save on shipping but I fear this would be offset by increased attention from Customs.

Thank you for the update on the Brooks jersey.  Yet more decisions.

Kind regards,

Alex
