Hi gents,

I have never been 100% happy with the material mis-match of the brushed Nitto stem and chromed steel handlebars so I’ve made some changes to my beloved Guv’nor over the past few months.

I’ve recently settled on a new Titan stem with Lauterwasser handlebars as pictured below.

I have a few more pics at perthvintagecycles.blogspot.com if you are interested.

Kind regards to all..

James

Hi James,

Thank you for sharing, another very fine customisation. I quite agree about the clash between the aluminium stem and the chrome handlebars.  Not sure I am up to the task though…

Has your Guv reached perfection yet, or do you have other mods in mind?  The chainset seems the only flaw to me.  That said I am waiting for the custom payment to filter through to allow me to collect a leather cinch and also some handle bar leather from Walnutstudiolo (thanks to irobot for the inspiration) to make some frame protectors as my Abus D-lock is wreaking havoc…

Kind regards,

Alex

Hi Alex,

No more modifications for me, I’m very happy with the Guv’nor just as it is now — although a little Brooks leather bartape on the bars might be nice?? I’ve also ordered a Pashley leather top tube protector from Cyclelogical in Newcastle (UK), it’ll be arriving shortly.

The aluminium chainset does not worry me at all, its polished and looks great and ties together the front and rear Sturmey aluminium hubs.

The material mis-match with the stem/handlebar combo only annoyed me because it’s right under your nose every time you hop on the bike, and little annoyances like that often get the better of me.

Thanks for your kind comments,

Regards

Evening Gentlemen,

Michael2500, what a nice addition. I’ve recently replaced my stem for a Nitto, a nice enough stem in isolation but for me the contrast between my bars and the stem is a little too marked. Maybe I should set Mrs. Adam on it with an industrial size pack of Brasso?

Adam

James,

Funnily enough my order of two lengths of leather for handlebar grips (And a cinch) arrived today from Walnutstudiolo in Oregon, USA.  I got hit for a customs fee of £12 ish.  So, I have two 24″ lengths of leather to make tube protectors for my Guv.  The question is: where to stitch this leather?  The seat tube needs protecting from my D-lock first.  But should I run the leather from lug to lug or leave a few inches of Buckingham black powder coat at each end?  Answers on an electronic postcard please!!

Adam,

Did your work include the Lauterwassers your wife detected in the post?  Pictures please!

Mercifully my wife is humouring my various Guv and cycling related purchases for now.…  Wait until I ask her to help sew on some leather tube protectors…

Evening Gentlemen,

Mr. McF, it did indeed. Work was completed on Saturday with a view to a ride on Sunday and a few pictures. As much as it pains me to say it Manchester weather was true to form and a deluge forced Mrs Adam and I to curtail our little adventure and run for home.

I shall endeavour to take a few pictures and a little right up to help other riders should they decide to go down this route.

Regards,

Adam

Adam,

Am agog! Did you go for bar end brakes discreetly taped under Brooks leather?  If so, how were the brake cables?

Alex

Mr. Adam,

I would love to see some pictures. I am contemplating the idea of adding Lauterwassers to the Guvnor ever since James had shared his wonderful pictures here and even more so, since I am using Lauterwassers on my last project.

Kind regards from Germany,

Hartwig

Very stylish stem, Michael2500. Bertelli use them on some of their exquisite creations and, in my humble opinion, they don’t get much more stylish than Bertelli.

Nice blog, by the way. dt

James,

The difference in metals between stem and bars never bothered me before… Now it screams at me…

I do like the shape of the stock Guv stem, would be spiffin if Pashley commissioned steel versions in future.

Your vision and hardwork should be applauded, Sir! Looks fantastic.

Rich
